CONTENTS
  • Introducing alternatives.
  • Which car manufacturers are producing
    non- polluting fuel.
  • Welcome to solar power.
  • Electric cars.
  • Hydrogen cars.
  • Food fuel for cars.
  • What will happen next.
  • End.

3
Introducing alternatives
  • Alternative power is all about making transport
practical, energy saving and non polluting. Lots
of suggestions offered. These include electric
power, solar power, hydrogen and even vegetable
oil or coffee. Alternative fuels have been
tested but only some are practical.
  • The leading sources of power are hydrogen,
solar and electric. Electric cars cannot travel
far from somewhere where they can be charged up.

CAR MANUFACTURERS USING NON-POLLUTING FUELS

WELCOME TO SOLAR POWER
  • Solar power is a practical solution for
    alternative powered transport.
  • Solar cars work by using solar cells to turn the
suns light energy into electricity to power a
motor. This then causes no pollution to the
    earths atmosphere.
  • The good thing about solar powered cars is they
charge as they go. So it now means that they
dont need to stop to refuel, like the other cars
on the road and solar power is free.
  • A problem for the solar powered cars is that in
Britain there is not a lot of sunlight unlike
    Australia.
  • Fact
  • The NUNA2 is the world fastest solar powered car.
It has a top speed of 105 mph.

6
ELECTRIC CARS
  • ELECTRIC cars are a good idea for people and for
    the environment.
  • They are charged in many different ways. Some are
charged from the mains and some are battery
powered. But this reduces the distance it can go
    from an electric point.
  • Nissan started making electric cars in the 1990s
, but stopped due to production costs and limited
    range of stock.
  • This car on the right is one of Nissans electric
    cars.

7
HYDROGEN CARS
  • The car on the right was made by BMW, it is a new
design using a fuel called hydrogen.
  • Hydrogen is non-polluting and it is also the most
abundant element in the universe. All that is
needed now is an economical way of supplying
hydrogen as a fuel. It is a very powerful fuel.
  • The problems with using hydrogen are that the
cars are only available in America, and that in
America only 2 petrol stations supply the
    substance.

8
FOOD FUEL FOR CARS
  • Some foods can also be used for car fuel. Most
diesel engines can be run on vegetable oil.
  • In America some wasted chip fat is used to power
    cars.
  • In some places sugar cane is used if theres lots
    to spare.
  • In Australia a sheep farmer has adapted his
pickup truck so that it is powered by sheep
    flatulence gas.

9
WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT
  • What do you want to do next? You could choose
between non-polluting fuels or choose the
    polluting way of transport.
  • Hopefully, the cars will become cheaper and more
efficient so everyone can use non-polluting fuel
and make the world a cleaner place.
  • The pictures on the right show a converted
corvette fsc-1. It is fuelled by petrol, but it
could be fuelled by hydrogen , solar power or
electric power. This would then mean you could
travel by air and road , which means the energy
used would be cheaper than normal aircraft.
  • Alasdair and I both think that we should start
using hydrogen, solar and electric power. We also
hope we have shown you how science is helping
make transport more economical, energy saving and
    environmentally friendly.
