3Your Paycheck
All new employees are required to complete the
new hire payroll packet immediately.
First payday for most new faculty is Friday,
September 1. 1 week of pay for contracts
beginning on August 21. Enroll in direct deposit
online we can help you today. Paperless pay -
view pay statements and sick leave balance
online. Paper paychecks (not recommended) are
mailed to HOME address Address and phone update
is self-service on-line through LOUIE
4Your Paycheck
- NAU faculty and staff are paid biweekly, on
Friday - New faculty are paid over the academic year (9
months) - 9 month pay schedule results in a pre-payment
of certain benefits starting Spring semester - Health Insurance, Dental Insurance, Vision
Insurance, - and Life Insurances
- This pre-payment will keep your benefit coverage
active over the summer months - June, July and August
- A 12-month pay option can be elected at the end
of first academic year. - Faculty who separate from NAU at the end of
their first academic year, benefits will
terminate effective June 1, 2007 - A refund of all pre-paid insurances as of the
last regular pay check. -

6Important Deadlines
You have 31 days from the first day of your
contract to enroll in your benefits and submit
required documents to HR. If your contract
begins on August 21, 2006, your 31 day deadline
is September 20, 2006. Voluntary benefits begin
the first of the month following your hire date
and completion of your online enrollment. For
example If you successfully enroll by August 31,
insurance elections become effective on September
1. If you wait until September to enroll, your
insurances become effective on October 1.
7Enroll in Benefits through LOUIE
Enrolling in benefits plans and designation of
dependents and beneficiaries is done on-line in
the LOUIE system (www.peoplesoft.nau.edu). ID
and password are needed to log onto LOUIE - the
same ones used to access your NAU email account.
For help with id/password issues, call the ITS
Solution Center at 523-1511. PeopleSoft LOUIE
Self Service Instructions to assist you through
your New Hire Event and a New Hire Worksheet are
included in your new hire packet. Enrollment
within the first 31 days of your employment is
required to prevent loss of benefits options.

- Pre-existing conditions covered after 6 months
- Includes a 30,000 ADD policy
- Standard Insurance
- Pays 66.67 of base monthly salary for 6 months.
- Pre-existing conditions covered immediately.
- Includes a return-to-work incentive.

Short-Term Disability premiums are deducted
after-tax. As a result, the benefits received
are non-taxable income and you can waive your
participation in the plan at any time.

- Two accounts are available
- Medical and Dependent Care
- Monies are pledged annually and deducted on a
pre-tax basis. - Eligible medical or dependent care expenses are
reimbursed to you from your contributions. - Contributions are divided evenly over the number
of paychecks received during the calendar year.

- Contributions for mid-year enrollments are
deducted over the remaining pay periods in the
plan year. - There are 8 pay periods between Sept.1 and Dec

Health Care FSA There is a maximum annual pledge
of 5,000. You may be reimbursed up to the total
amount of the pledge for the year at any
time. Dependent Care FSA There is a maximum
annual pledge of 5,000. You may be reimbursed
only up to the amount you actually funded through
payroll deductions.

New employees who do not elect a retirement plan
within 31 days of their hire date will default
into the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).

ASRS - A defined benefit plan Provides
retirement benefits based on a formula that uses
age, years of service and salary to determine a
pension benefit. Pension benefit is based on
your highest 36 consecutive months of salary in
the last 10 years of employment.

Benefits
- Guarantees a monthly benefit at retirement for
your lifetime. - ASRS provides a health insurance premium subsidy

the AZ Dept. of Administration (ADOA) or from
ASRS.

- Vesting
- Begins after 5 years of service, with partial
ownership of employer contributions between 5
10 years. Full vesting at 10 years. - Access to Monies
- Upon separation, you have access to 100 of
employee contributions and interest. Access to
employer contributions is based on vesting
status. - Monies may be withdrawn or rolled-over to other
retirement saving plans. Withdrawing funds will
disqualify the participant from receiving
benefits from the plan and earned years of
service will be relinquished. Cash withdrawals
may incur tax penalties. - No loans can be taken against these monies.

Regents Plan
ORP - A defined contribution plan is A self
directed plan in which you determine your
investment strategy with selected financial
institutions. Total accumulation of
contributions, earnings of the plan, and
investment strategies determine your retirement
benefit.

48Optional Retirement Plan - ORP
Vesting 100 vesting of employer contributions
occurs after 5 years of continuous service. All
vested monies plus interest earned are deposited
into the employees account in a lump sum and
then per pay period thereafter. Immediate
vesting is available if you have an active
membership (monies on deposit) in a qualified
retirement plan from a college, university or
higher ed institution in a state other than
Arizona, or in a similar retirement plan in
another country. Be sure to provide vesting
information when submitting your retirement
elections on-line. Access to Monies Upon
separation you have access to 100 of the value
of your contributions. Access to employer
contributions is based on vesting status. Cash
withdrawals may be subject to income tax and fees
and penalties. Loans - No loans. Portability
Easily portable to most higher educations
institutions. Changing Investment Firms - You may
change investment firms once per fiscal year.

Long-term disability insurance (LTD) is a
mandatory benefit, and is tied to your retirement
benefit. Selection of your Retirement Plan

59Making Changes to Your Benefits - Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment is the time each year when
employees are able to enroll or make changes to
their benefit plans. Insurance open enrollment
is August 21 September 8, this year.
Flexible spending open enrollment is in
November with new pledges effective Jan 1st.
Employees hired for the new academic year
should be aware their new hire benefits will be
effective for one month September before the
new insurance plan year begins and rates change.

enrollment MUST be completed prior to completing
the open enrollment process. You do not need to

a new hire. However, if you change your mind,
Open Enrollment will allow you to make a change.

allow an employee the opportunity to make a
change to their benefits mid-plan year. The type
of life event the employee experiences will

Employees have 31 days from the date of the
qualified life event to notify the Human
Resources Department, make changes to their
benefit plan in the LOUIE system, and submit all
supporting documentation.
Failure to meet the 31-day deadline may have the

in no coverage for dependents Loss of
coverage for dependents Loss of COBRA
rights for your dependents or Other
negative impacts to you and/or your dependents
