Standards of Learning Program
22.1-253.131. Standard 1. Instructional
programs supporting the Standards of Learning and
other educational objectives. The Board of
Education shall establish educational objectives
known as the Standards of Learning, which shall
form the core of Virginia's educational program,
and other educational objectives, which together
are designed to ensure the development of the
skills that are necessary for success in school
and for preparation for life in the years beyond.

Standards of Learning Program
In 1995, the Board of Education of the
Commonwealth of Virginia took an important step
to raise the expectations for all students in
public schools by adopting new Standards of
Learning in the areas of English, mathematics,
history and social science, science, and
computer/technology.
5
Standards of Learning Program
  • The Virginia Standards of Learning set reasonable
targets and expectations for what teachers are
expected to teach and what students are expected
to learn. These academic standards are used to
inform parents and teachers of what students are
learning and to make schools accountable for
teaching the content found in the Standards of
    Learning.
  • Two Components of the Standards of Learning
    Program
  • Standards of Learning
  • Standards of Learning Assessment

The Standards of Learning
for Virginia Public Schools describe the
commonwealth's expectations for student learning
and achievement in grades K-12 in English,
mathematics, science, history/social science,
technology, the fine arts, foreign language,
health and physical education, and driver
education.

Standards of Learning Assessment Program
  • DEVELOPMENT OF THE
    STANDARDS OF LEARNING ASSESSMENTS
  • The SOL assessments are composed of
    multiple-choice items and writing prompts
(English only) designed to test all of the SOL
content except where noted on the assessment
    blueprint.
  • The Standards of Learning test blueprints serve
as a guide to teachers, parents, and students in
that they show Standards of Learning covered by a
test, reporting categories of test items, number
of test items, and general information about how
    the test questions are constructed.

Standards of Learning Assessment Program
  • DEVELOPMENT OF
    THE STANDARDS OF LEARNING ASSESSMENTS
  • The SOL assessments are considered
criterion-referenced tests. The focus of this
type of assessment is the attainment of content
    mastery.
  • Test like the SAT and ACT are norm-referenced
tests. This type of assessment compares a
students performance against his or her peer
    group across the nation.

Standards of Learning Assessment Program
  • DEVELOPMENT OF THE
    STANDARDS OF LEARNING ASSESSMENTS
  • Involvement by Virginia Educators
  • Teachers, administrators, content specialists,
and private citizens from across Virginia
participate in the development of the SOL
assessments. These individuals review the test
items and forms to ensure that they adequately
measure student knowledge fairly and without
    bias.
