Title: The Potential of 4515 YearRound Multitrack Student Scheduling

1
The Potential of 45-15 Year-Round Multi-track
Student Scheduling
  • An exploratory overview presentation to the
Board of Education at its Retreat on September
    23, 2006

2
WHAT ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?
  • 45-15 YEAR-ROUND MULTI-TRACK
  • School Facility is basically used year-round.
  • Student body divided into four groups with each
group scheduled in a staggered manner where
while three groups are in school, the fourth
group is on a break for 15 days.
  • The above schedule in an optimal situation allows
the school to educate 33 more students than in
    the 10-month traditional schedule.
  • Guilford has used concepts of year-round
education in Hampton and Oak Hill, but it was not
multi-track and the 15 days, were used in part,
    as an instructional intersession to
    remediate/accelerate.

NATIONAL INFORMATION
  • According to data from the National Association
    of Year-Round Education
  • Usage North Carolina had 96 Year-Round Schools
in 2005-2006 which puts it in the top ten states
    using Year-Round Schools.
  • Academic Achievement Segmenting the summer
break into smaller 3-week segments logically
should diminish the infamous, summer backslide
often noted when school reopens for fall. See

How might it work?

THE EXPERIENCE OF A NEIGHBOR WAKE COUNTY
  • (WITH THANKS TO CAROLYN MASSENGILL)
  • Began in 1991 at sample site and grew.
  • 2006-2007 Elementary Schools 16 Middle
    Schools 4
  • (with 6 more schools on a modified YRE)
  • 14, 000 students presently involved now proposed
to move toward 28,000 students and maybe more.
  • Previously done through magnet-self selection
    within geographically based zone.
  • Standard for Wake Schools socio-economic
diversity no more than 40 on free/reduced meal
    membership.
  • Why no high schools? By Wakes calculations, 3
million extra dollars/school to offer YRE
calendars at high schools you will run into
    course offering problems/costs (remember each
track is like a high school unto itself). There
are other student activity issues too, but there
are ways to overcome many outside of school hours.

PROS AND CONS
  • PROS
  • More efficient use of high value capital
    resource our buildings.
  • Educational opportunity.
  • Reduced trailer purchases relative to traditional
    calendars.
  • Teachers classrooms are only theirs for 45 days-
when they return after 15 days, new room.

PROS AND CONS
  • CONS
  • Change is hard.
  • Teachers classrooms are only theirs for 45 days-
when they return after 15 days, new room.
  • Annual maintenance/clean-up must be compacted
into smaller time frames or executed outside of
    the traditional school district workday/week
calendar (night shifts, etc.). Some wear out
    issues on equipment.
  • The building usage for public becomes more
difficult and compressed with additional school
    usage and maintenance needs.
  • Parents with students at different school levels
    on different calendars.
  • Change is hard.

10
CLOSE
  • If concept is deemed worthy of further
    consideration much work in instruction,
operation, and implementation will be required.
  • Questions and discussion
