Language Arts Units of Study
  • Tentative plan for the year
  • Semester One Short stories Novel study (The
    Outsiders) Reading/Writing Workshop Poetry
  • Semester Two Literature Circles Novel study
    Reading/Writing Workshop
  • Reading, WRITING, speaking, listening,
    organization, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary
    skills will be taught throughout the year.

Book Information
  • Students will be asked to purchase three-four
    books this year
  • Two for literature circles and two for novel
    studies
  • The first book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, is
    needed in class BEFORE September 29 (it can be
    purchased at the Book Fair)

Materials
  • Each day students are expected to have their
    planner, Language Arts notebook, pen/pencil, and
    paper in class. It is also helpful to bring a
    pleasure book to class each day. Students
    will know in advance when other materials are
    needed.
  • Students are expected to use their planners to
    keep themselves organized they should copy the
    homework and agenda down each day.

Materials
  • The two tabs for Language Arts are
  • Handouts
  • Graded Papers
  • Students can keep these two tabs in a notebook
    that is used for other subjects. I do not
    require a notebook devoted to LA.
  • A 3-subject spiral is also needed. It will be
    kept in the classroom and used for warm-ups and
    writing activities throughout the year.

Expectations for Written Work
  • Students are expected to answer in complete
    sentences on EVERY assignment
  • Students are expected to show pride in their
    completed assignments and turn in papers that are
    free of rips, tears papers should be neat and
    professional looking

Grading Policy
  • Class work 20
  • Quizzes 30
  • Major grades (exams, projects, etc.) 40
  • Homework 10
  • All work is expected to be completed and turned
    in on or before the assigned due date.
  • Work that is one day late can earn a maximum of
    70
  • Work that is two days late can earn a maximum of
    50

Saturday School
  • Students that accumulate 2 or more missing
    assignments will be asked to attend Saturday
    School to make up the work for up to 50 credit
  • Saturday School is from 9-12 in the Grisham
    cafeteria
  • Parents will be contacted if a student is signed
    up for Saturday School

Grades
  • Students should keep track of their grades by
    keeping their notebooks organized with their
    graded papers
  • A list of Missing Assignments will be posted on
    the Grade Board at least once a week students
    are responsible for checking the Grade Board and
    keeping up with their grade/assignments
  • Use Home Access Center to keep track of grades
    and missing assignments

Extra Credit
  • Each Six Weeks will offer new opportunities for
    enrichment/extra credit
  • Extra Credit Opportunities can be found on the
    Grade Board or on my website
  • Throughout the year, ANY assignment that is typed
    will earn 5 extra points
