46PROCEDURES FOR MAKING A TRANSPORTATION CONTROL
NUMBER (TCN) FROM A UNIT LINE NUMBER (ULN)
A TCN is a 17 character data element assigned to
control and manage every shipment unit
throughout the transportation pipeline. the TCN
for each shipment is unique and not
duplicated 5 steps of constructing a TCN from a
ULN utilizing an EXAMPLE 5 digit ULN CEAA1. 1.
Position 1 is a service code, (A for Army.)
EXAMPLE A. (service codes taken DOD 4500.32-R,
Appendix G) 2. Positions 2-8 (7 total
positions) are reserved for the ULN (for the 5
digit ULN CEAA1, add 2 zeros to fill out the
remaining positions.) EXAMPLE CEAA1 00 3.
Positions 9-14 (6 total digits) are reserved for
the cargo items increment number off the CALM
(AALPS) load plan. EXAMPLE BM0001 4.
Position 15 is reserved for a zero EXAMPLE 0
47PROCEDURES FOR MAKING A TRANSPORTATION CONTROL
NUMBER (TCN) FROM A UNIT LINE NUMBER (ULN)
(continued)
5. Positions 16 17 are reserved for a split /
partial shipment indicator, normally XX.
If more that one piece of cargo will be moving
under this TCN, you can give each piece its own
identity by replacing the last X with alpha
characters A through B. EXAMPLE XA, XB,
XC, ectup to XZ
