  • Pyotr Alekseench Romanov who is presently known
as Peter the Great, was born June9,1672 in Moscow
Russia. His father Alexis, who died in January
1676, left two widows. They were very mean to
Peter. As a result, he looked at life and people
in a cruel way. After Alexis died, Peters
brother, Theodore III became emperor until his
    death in 1682.

  • Peters mother wanted him to be sole tsar of
Russia, but Alexiss first wife didnt want Peter
to rule alone. They wanted Peter and his half
mentally challenged brother to joint rule. They
both accepted as joint rulers. But since they
were underage their sister Sophia, took over the
position. She fell in love with Prince Golistin,
who ruled as he wanted and very cruely.

4
  • Peter the Great thought that he could take on
Golitsin. He did so in August 1689 at only
seventeen years old. Sophia and Golitsin were
thrown from power, and Peter the Great became
Russias sole leader. He was emperor from 1689 to
1725. He changed a great deal.

5
  • Peter the Great was almost seven feet tall and
broad. Peter was violent, had a very big mouth,
and was very powerful. Peter enjoyed
shipbuilding, ship sailing, drilling, and sham
fights. He learned to practice dentistry and how
to be a carpenter. Peter even cut beards and put
    tax on them.

6
  • Peter the Great changed Russia a great deal. He
was interested in naval science and enjoyed
building boats. That is why Peter the Great
started the first Russian army. Peter the Great
was only promoted to skipper in his very own
navy. Peter also modernized the army.

7
  • Russia was at war through most of Peters
reign. In 1695 Peter tried to take over the
Caspian Sea because he thought the White Sea was
    to narrow.
  • This resulted in a war against the Turks and the
Tatars. But Russia could not take on the Turks
and the Tatars, and they ended up losing the war.
So, Peter had to stay content with the White Sea.

  • In 1697, Charles XII, who was only fifteen at
the time, became Sweden's monarch. Other monarchs
thought he was weak. So, they tried taking away
his territories. This caused the Great Northern
War to start in 1700. Peter was friends with the
Sweden monarchy until 1699, when he joined the
alliance with Augusta Fredrick. In 1721, Russia
had conquered Ingria, Estania, Livonia, Vyborg,
Kexholm, some of Karelia, and the Baltic Sea.

9
  • Peter the Great made Russia into a European
power. He introduced a lot of Western European
    scientific, technological, cultural, and
political conceptions and practices. Russia had
used the Gregorian calendar for more than 127
years. In 1709 Peter changed the changed the
Gregorian calendar to the Julian calendar. Russia
    had this calendar until 1917.

10
  • In 1924 Peter had an inflammation of the
bladder. He died on January28, 1725. His wife
Catherine succeeded him until her death in 1727.
Then Peter II, Peter the Greats grandson, ruled
until 1730 when he died of small pox at only
seventeen years of age. Peter the Great changed
    Russia a great deal.
