Child Abuse
  • Begin this activity by thinking about the problem
of child abuse in the novel, The Outsiders.
Johnny is a victim of child abuse. Many children
suffer from problems like Johnny every day, but
there are many agencies in the world that work to
help young victims of child abuse recover from
their problems. In this activity you will conduct
web-based research to read more about the
problems of child abuse and to find agencies that
    provide support for survivors.

3
Child Abuse
  • In this activity you will visit different web
sites to read more about the problems of child
abuse and to find agencies that provide support
for survivors. Then you will write a letter to
the character Johnny, advising him about what he
can do concerning the problems he faces with his
family. You will include in your letter
information that you obtained on the web.

below. While at each site, you want to write down
    the following information

Homelessness
  • Begin this activity by thinking about when
Ponyboy and Johnny are homeless for a week.
Homelessness is a terrible problem in the world
today. Unfortunately, in the United States,
homelessness affects children, adults, and even
teenagers like you. The life of homeless people
must be terribly difficult. Johnny and Ponyboy
both realize this during the week that they run
    away.
  • In this activity you will visit websites that
show pictures of homeless people. Then you will
make a cluster to prepare to write a poem about
    homelessness.

10
Homelessness
  • In this activity you will visit different web
sites to view pictures of homeless people. You
will describe the images that you see. Then you
will make a cluster about homelessness. Finally,
you will write a poem about homelessness. Your
poem will use images that you saw on the web.
  • The Process Exploring the Web, Creating a
    Product
  • First, visit the following websites to look at
pictures of homeless people. Write down the
images you see while visiting this site. Pay
attention to the way these people look and the
way that they live. Notice the things in the
background. Store your notes in a folder so you
can refer back to them later.

  • Now that you have written down the images that
you saw after looking at homeless people, think
about the difficulties that Ponyboy and Johnny
had when they were homeless. Do you think that
these people on the streets experience some of
the same things that Johnny and Ponyboy did when
    they ran away?
  • Make a cluster of words to use in your
homelessness poem. Think about the experience of
homelessness based on the characters in the
novel, the pictures on the web and the homeless
people you have seen in your own life. Cluster
words and images that come to mind. Use the
example on the next slide to get started. Try to
include at least 25 images on your cluster.

Homelessness

Homelessness
  • Finally, use your cluster of homeless images to
create a poem about homelessness. Be creative.
Use words that evoke pictures in the reader's
mind. Use words that SHOW what it is like to be
    homeless.
  • The following is an example of a poem about
    homelessness.
  •
  • Go Ahead, Run Away
  • Cold, colder, freezing-
  • hungry too.
  •  Sleeping on the floor of a
  • deserted church
  • or maybe on a comfy
  • street corner.
  • No bed if you're sick
  • No food.
  • Nothin warm.
  •  Just a dusty cement mattress
  •
  •  A brick wall, or an alley for a toilet.
  • Hit the nearest dumpster for breakfast,
  • Hooray, it's bologna again!
  •
  • Nothing healthy to eat.
  • It's scary out on the street
  • the life of a homeless teen.

Dealing with Grief
  • Begin this activity by thinking about death in
the novel, The Outsiders. When someone close to
us dies we experience a loss. That loss is called
grief. Ponyboy experiences a great deal of grief
throughout this story. First his parents die, and
then Johnny and Dally die in the same night. This
is why he gets so sick and confused toward the
end of the novel. All people experience the loss
of a loved one sometime during their life. This
activity is designed to help students contemplate
death and grief, and to learn ways to better cope
    with mourning.

16
Dealing with Grief
  • In this activity you will visit different web
sites to read and understand more about grief.
Make connections between what the websites
discuss concerning grief, and the way Ponyboy
behaves after Johnny and Dally's deaths. After,
you will write a paragraph explaining and
describing how Ponyboy was feeling after the
death of his friends. Use the terms you found on
the web. Write about Ponyboy's behavior and
    feelings.

17
Dealing with Grief
  • The Process Exploring the Web, Creating a
    Product
  • First, visit the following websites to read more
about grief. While visiting this site, write down
5 grieving behaviors that Ponyboy experiences in
the novel. Store your notes in a folder so you

Dealing with Grief
  • Now that you have learned more about grief, write
a descriptive paragraph in which you report what
Ponyboy is experiencing after Johnny and Dally
die. Describe Ponyboy's behavior and what he was
feeling. Include information in your paragraph
that you learned from the web.

19
Dealing with Grief
  • How You Will Be Graded
  • At the end of this activity give your teacher the
    following
  • Notes from the 3 websites about grief (5 grieving
behaviors that are discussed in the website that
    Ponyboy experiences in the novel).
  • A descriptive paragraph that reports information
    about Ponyboy's experience with grief.
  • The paragraph should include the following
  • Title
  • Explanation of what Ponyboy does that is evidence
    of grief
  • Explanation of what Ponyboy must have been
feeling while he was in mourning
  • Explanation of what grieving behaviors were
typical, based on your web research
  • Correct standard written English (spelling,
capital letters, punctuation, word order and
    usage)
  • Legibility

Extra Credit
  • List the members of your family.
  • Describe each family member.
  • Where does your family live?
  • What does your home look like?
  • What foods does your family enjoy?
  • Can you include any favorite family recipes?
  • What are some important family traditions in your
    family?
  • What activities does your family enjoy together?
  • What are some important moments in your family's
history? Include both happy and sad moments.
  • What are some goals of your family?
  • Now, create a "Family Celebration Poster" for
your family. If possible, you might create a
mini scrapbook or photo album instead. The
purpose is to celebrate your family and to share
the special aspects of your family with others.
Your poster should have both words and pictures.
  • You can use any artistic means to create your
poster. You may bring photos from home. You can
draw pictures of your family members or cut out
pictures of people who resemble your family from
magazines. You can also use the computer to
    generate illustrations.
