1Programs
- A Chapters Guide with
- REALISTIC TIPS
2What Programs should do!
Select strong speakers/programs. Create flyers
that get noticed. Make sure materials are well
written. Promote chapter programs on chapter web
site. Select a location that is convenient for
members. Strive for consistency in meeting
locations and quality. Alter meetings between
breakfast, lunch and dinner. Advertise program
in chapter newsletter and local newspapers.
3How to pick topics
How do you determine meeting topics? Use the
CAP as a guide for programs that are
recommended/required for points Survey chapter
members to determine topics of interests. Ask
members for ideas at chapter meetings. Network
with other chapters Plan programs one year in
advance.
4From SHRM web site
What have been this year's most successful
chapter programs? Mock trial. Workplace
violence. Panel discussion of CEO's Panel
made-up of Senior HR members. CEO/HR discussion
on adding value. Mock deposition. Acting troupe
on HR topic. Humor in the workplace. Relevant
current events.

will be surprised who may be willing to
speak Assign each board member responsibility

8Get the Board on Board
What is your chapter's policy on paying speakers?
Program Chair and all members soliciting
programs need to know the budget and what you can
offer.this greatly helps keep everyone stating
the same amount. This can vary-so what is your
policy??? Speakers are not paid for speaking at
chapter meetings. Speaker's are given a gift
for speaking. Chapter members and/or their
companies donate the gifts.
9FREE GUEST TO PROMOTE MEMBERSHIP??
Under what circumstances may guests attend
chapter meetings? Some meetings are more
expensive to run, will your chapter have a policy
about guest offerings? Guests are allowed to
attend three chapter meetings without becoming a
member. Guests are charged a non-member rate,
but when they join they get to attend their first
meeting free of charge.
10NETWORKING Can save you money!
Does your chapter ever co-sponsor programs with
other groups? If so, which ones? This can help
with costs as long as the quality of the program
is there! Most chapters do co-sponsor programs
with other groups. Below are some of those
groups. ASTD Chapters Chamber of Commerce
Comp/Benefits Groups Employer Associations
Women in Management Business Industry Education
11Seminars, Job Fairs and MORE
What other programs are offered in addition to
your monthly chapter meetings (seminars, vendor
fairs, etc.)? Job fairs with major papers or
local colleges! Meetings for members in
transition Employer Resources Conference
Seminars for companies without HR departments.
Legal Seminars and Programs that offer
certification are often longer but the payoff to
members is priceless!
12Publication of Meetings/Programs
How do you get the local HR community to know of
the existence of your chapter? Have a publicity
chair. Invite the media to attend meetings free
of charge. Link with your local chamber
website. Establish strategic alliances with
individuals and groups in community. Utilize
free community space in local newspapers and on
local radio stations
