Title: SAFETY ON THE ROAD:
11
2 SAFETY ON THE ROAD
WE ALL HAVE A ROLE TO PLAY
3- FACT
- More police officers are killed or injured each
year in vehicle related incidents than in violent
confrontations with firearms.
3
4- Hazardous working conditions are an inevitable
part of every law enforcers job especially in
traffic enforcement. -
- However, these dangers can be dramatically
reduced when citizens practice safer driving
habits.
5STEER CLEAR
- When you see a police car flashing its lights and
sounding its siren, try to get out of the way as
soon as you can do so safely.
5
6The law specifically states, if the lights and
siren are activated . . .
- You must yield the right of way!
- You must drive to the far right edge of the
curb! - You must clear an intersection!
7Always use good judgment when you do get out of
the way.
- If you can't pull to the right, leave room
for the emergency vehicle to get by. - If you have already stopped, stay put.
- After the emergency vehicle has passed,
re-enter the travel lane with caution. - Do not try to follow an emergency vehicle.
7
8KEEP YOUR DISTANCE
Give public safety officials the space to do
their job.
- When passing by an accident, stalled vehicle,
police car, or work zone, make certain that you
have allowed sufficient room to avoid any
collision or mishap.
8
9PAY ATTENTION
- Watch for flaggers, cones, or flares.
-
- These alerts are vital to protecting the work
area or traffic accident, and they must be
followed for safety reasons.
10STAY ALERT
- Pay full attention to the road ahead and avoid
any 'extra curricular' activity within your cabin
while proceeding through work zones or accidents.
11- Stay with the flow of traffic.
- Never race to merge with traffic that is nearing
a work zone or accident. - Never slow down to gawk.
12However, never stop in an intersection. If you
are in an intersection when you see an emergency
vehicle, continue through the intersection and
then move to the right as soon as you can and
stop.
Never slow down to gawk.
13Upon approaching a stationary emergency vehicle,
a driver should move into a lane NOT adjacent to
the emergency vehicle... ...reduce speed and
proceed with caution.
