Journals are stupid

• There are a few people who think daily journals
  are silly ideas that only fill up time.
• There is extensive research to prove otherwise

This is why we do it

• Research shows
• Daily journal entries in class allow students to
  explore different aspects of their lives without
  immediate fear of being criticized.
• Journaling improves student writing overall and
  encourages reluctant writers to begin writing.

Getting into the text

• Our text for this term is Hatchet!!
• In this book we will learn about survival,
  isolation in adolescents, and the development of
  the character Gary Paulsen.
• There will be plenty of questioning the text.

• There are several purpose to art in the
  classroom.
• In our room we will be using a variety
  interpretive tools (including paint) to help
  everyone understand the text.
• GET READY TO GET DIRTY!!

• There are new technologies used in the classroom
  as art projects

Movies

• Creating visual images for students helps improve
  comprehension.
• During this unit we watch and analyze the movie
  CASTAWAY (Tom Hanks) to make parallels between it
  and Hatchet.

  helps readers understand the text and increases
  class involvement.
