Irregular Verbs
  • For some verbs, the past tense is formed by
    changing the spelling of the present form.
    Here are some examples
  • Present Past
  • run ran
  • sing sang
  • go went

Sometimes the past participle of an irregular
verb is the same as the past form.
  • Examples
  • Present Past Past Participle
  • say said has said
  • teach taught have taught
  • lead led was led

However, many irregular verbs have past
participle forms that are different from the past
forms.
  • Examples
  • Present Past Past Participle
  • throw threw were thrown
  • swim swam have swum
  • sing sang have sung

Remember these rules whenever you use regular or
irregular verbs.
  • 1. The past form of a verb is always used alone
    without a helping verb.
  • Example The athlete drank the entire container
    of water.
  • 2. The past participle must always be used with
    a helping verb.
  • Example The athlete had drunk the entire
    container of water during the time out.

    a tree.
  • Alexandra has fallen from a tree.
  • 2. Samantha should have (past participle of
    swim) in the tournament.
  • Samantha should have swum in the tournament.
