Welcome to Indonesia An island nation
2
The Republic of Indonesia
  • The Republic of Indonesia is relatively new. The
nation of over 17,500 islands was established in
1949. Only a few of its larger islands were
    settled at that time.
  • The combined size of the islands is almost 3
times the size of Texas. The current population
is over 242,000,000 inhabiting approximately 6000
    islands.

3
  • The archipelago of islands is located above an
area that is seismically and volcanically active
on a daily basis. The area consists of many
tectonic plates and is called the Pacific Ring of
Fire. Here is Mount Bromo in action.

species and 230 bird species - gibbons, leaf

The Pranbanam Hindu Temple Complex
  • The Buddha statue at the famous Hindu/Buddha
temple of Borobudur was constructed during the
8th century. Structures created prior to the 8th
century were constructed of wood and have
deteriorated as a result of the moist tropical
    climate.
  • From the 10th century to the 19th century the
temple lay covered in jungle growth and volcanic
ash. The Dutch began restoration in the early
1900s and in 1973 the US completed it.

Man and Masks
  • Art is found in some form - ritual, religious,
and/or celebration - in most cultures.
  • The more leisure time a culture has, the more
intricate and complex the art becomes.
  • Art is inclusive of dance, theatre and the fine
arts at times these arts are combined in
    presentation.
  • Masks are used in theatre and dance in many
cultures and Java is no exception.
