2I was born and raised in Albany, Oregon
- Albany is the seat of Linn County, in the heart
of the fertile Willamette Valley. - It is a beautiful place to live, nestled between
the ocean and the mountains.
3Some big events from growing up in Albany
- Above, left The World Championship Timber
Carnival (sadly, now defunct) drew competitors
from all over to display their prowess in various
timber sports. - Above, right Free weekly concerts at our
riverpark provide fun for the whole town. They
are hugely successful and bring internationally
renowned acts each year. My favorite was the
Dixie Chicks.
4I chose a small liberal arts college
- Linfield College was in a small town, but close
to a couple of good-sized cities. - I lived in the oldest, tallest building on
campus, without an elevator! Moving was NOT fun.

5Linfield encouraged study abroad
- They had programs all over the world.
- We didnt have to do any administrative stuff to
transfer credits, find housing, or pay fees
abroad. - They even paid our airfare!
- I went to Europe twice on their dime.
6First, I went to England for a semester of study
and travels
Right Me at Stonehenge. We missed the bus back
and were there for 6 hours. You only need about ½
hour to be satisfied. . .

at the Tower of London
7When I wasnt traveling, I lived in Nottingham
The Major Oak, supposedly where the Robin Hood
and his Merry Men held clandestine meetings in
Sherwood Forest. It is covered in fungicide (the
green goo) and supported by poles because it is
on tree life support.
8I lived in a flat with 11 students
- We each had a small bedroom with bath, and shared
a kitchen and living area. - We were from 6 different countries.
- This picture is from the night Mike made us all a
special curry.
9Nottingham was a beautiful city
I used to walk through this cemetery on my way to
the shops downtown.
10I Eurailed around the Continent during the
Easter holiday
- I hadnt been terribly interested in France
before traveling there, but I fell in love with
the country, the people, and the language. - I started taking French classes as soon as I
returned to the U.S.
11Once back in the U.S., I made it my goal to leave
the country for a significant period of time each
year
- I spent about a month in Europe each year for the
next few years. - I took German in Mainz, Germany
- I practiced French in Paris
- I traveled with my family as a tourist
- My escape from the U.S. took the form of moving
to Canada to come to SLAIS this year!
