11KEY TERMS USED BY EETAP
Environmental Education is a learning process
that increases peoples knowledge and awareness
about the environment and associated challenges,
develops the necessary skills and expertise to
address the challenges, and fosters attitudes,
motivations, and commitments to make informed
decisions and take responsible action (UNESCO,
Tbilisi Declaration, 1978).
12KEY TERMS USED BY EETAP
Environmental Literacy is the desired outcome of
Environmental Education programs. Environmentally
literate individuals understand both ecological
and social-political systems and have the
inclinations to apply that understanding to any
decisions that pose consequences for
environmental quality.
13KEY TERMS USED BY EETAP
EE Capacity Building is the development of
effective leaders, organizations, networks, plans
and evaluation in order to achieve comprehensive
environmental education programs at the state and
local levels. Comprehensive EE programs are a
combination of structure, funding, and program
components which serve to incorporate EE into
educational institutions at the state and local
level.
14KEY TERMS USED BY EETAP
Formal EE EE conducted within formal school
settings (K-12, colleges, and universities). Non-
formal EE EE conducted in non-formal school
settings such as parks, museums, nature centers,
zoos, botanical gardens, etc. Informal EE EE
conducted using the mass media such as
newspapers, magazines, radio, and television.
