Blowing Smoke?
  • New York State continues to see dramatic declines
in the use of cigarettes in its middle and high
    school students
  • Current Use (Smoke a cigarette on 1 or more of
    the last 30 days)
  • Middle School 10.5 (2000) 4.1
    (2006) 60 Reduction

Blowing Smoke Continued
  • The decline in smoking rates supports the efforts
of tobacco free education, higher taxes on
tobacco products and tougher laws on smoking.
  • By keeping our children tobacco free we encourage
a healthier future for all of us.

4
Program Objectives
  • Increase students knowledge of the short-term
effects and image-based consequences of tobacco
    use.
  • Illustrate the costs of using tobacco and ways
they could better spend their money.
  • Help students identify reasons why people use
    tobacco.
  • Prompt students to think critically about tobacco
advertising and how the tobacco industry markets
