- New York State continues to see dramatic declines
in the use of cigarettes in its middle and high
school students - Current Use (Smoke a cigarette on 1 or more of
the last 30 days) - Middle School 10.5 (2000) 4.1
(2006) 60 Reduction - High School 27.1 (2000) 16.3 (2006)
40 Reduction - Among high school students in New York State in
2006, 16.3 smoked cigarettes on 1 or more of the
past 30 days. This rate approaches the Healthy
People 2010 national health objective goal or

- The decline in smoking rates supports the efforts
of tobacco free education, higher taxes on
tobacco products and tougher laws on smoking. - By keeping our children tobacco free we encourage
a healthier future for all of us.
4Program Objectives
- Increase students knowledge of the short-term
effects and image-based consequences of tobacco
use. - Illustrate the costs of using tobacco and ways
they could better spend their money. - Help students identify reasons why people use
tobacco. - Prompt students to think critically about tobacco
advertising and how the tobacco industry markets
their products to youth.
