Title: Understanding FTP, WS_FTP and WinSCP

1
Understanding FTP,WS_FTP and WinSCP
  • A Brief Introduction

2
What is FTP?
  • FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
  • FTP client software allows you to transfer files
from your hard drive to a remote server.
  • In many schools, FTP is used to publish html
files (web page files) to a remote web server.

3
What is WS_FTP
  • WS_FTP is just one of many examples of FTP client
    software.
  • You may have also heard of FTP Voyager, CuteFTP
    or WinSCP.
  • Basically, FTP clients enable the user to upload
or download files to and from a remote server. It
doesnt usually matter which one you use as they
all work much the same way.

4
Starting WS_FTP
5
Starting WS_FTP
- Be sure to choose Hyperion - Enter your
userid and password (same as WebCT) - Press OK
6
Are you connected?
7
  • public_html folder is the destination for your
    webpage
  • double click on this folder to see the contents

8
  • The ChgDir button will allow you to navigate to
    the
  • appropriate local folder (where you have your
    files stored).

9
  • This path is relative to each computer and
operating system. A common path (win98) is
    c\windows\desktop.

10
  • Arrows allow you to upload ( -) or download
    (

11
A Few more Guidelines
  • If you desire to upload into a particular folder
(for instance, public_html), be sure that the
right screen displays the contents of that
    folder.
  • After you have uploaded files to the public_html
folder, you MUST change the rights on these files
and folders to view them on the web (see chmod).

12
chmod
  • chmod allows you to change access permissions of
    files and/or directories.
  • Modes determine who can read, change or execute a
    file (file security and access).
  • You can access chmod for each file or folder (in
WS_FTP) by right-clicking on the file, and
    selected chmod.

13
Chmod right click on file.
14
  • Always make sure that the chmod is set to the
    selections below. Always press OK.

15
WinSCP (aka Secure Copy Client)
  • Same principle as WS_FTP
  • Easier to use in my opinion.
  • Drag-and-drop interface of uploads/downloads
    (instead of arrows).
  • chmod still applies

16
  • At initial screen, make sure you are in the
stored sessions tab and double-click on
    hyperion.

17
  • Enter your userid and password (same as WebCT)
    and choose Login.

18
  • Same principle here. Remote on right, local on
left. Drag and drop to upload or download.
  • However, note that do get to chmod, you must
right-click on a file or folder and choose
    properties.

19
Do you get it? Lets find out.
  • 1) Open up MS Word of OO Write and create a new
    document.
  • 2) Type in the words Here is my own website.
  • 3) Save file as a webpage or html document (this
will be available in the save as options.
  • 4) Save the file as index.htm (IMPORTANT)
somewhere where you can find it easily.

20
Do you get it? Lets find out. (cont.)
  • 5) Use either WS_FTP or WinSCP to upload your new
file index.htm to the public_html on hyperion.
  • 6) Change the chmod to the appropriate rights.
  • 7) Try to view the file on the web now. Go to
Internet Explorer or Netscape and use the
    following URL http//uregina.ca/username/index.h
    tm
  • 8) If it works, send that URL to your instructor.
This will be the location for your future course
    webpage.
