7How did we get started?
- Getting involved with the American Heart
Associations Operation Heartbeat - What are the needs of community to promote
healthy heart living? - Who will we target?
- What will be our focus?
8What does the experts say?
- People know that heart disease is the No. 1
killer of Americans, but they dont fully realize
that its a silent process that begins in
childhood, says lead author Christine L.
Williams, M.D., M.P.H., immediate past chair of
the American Heart Associations Committee on
Atherosclerosis, Hypertension, and Obesity in the
Young.
9Who is are target group?
- Brain-storming unleashed the true fact that we
need to educate our young people - What age? 5th and 6th graders
- What can we discuss with them?
- How can we utilize what we learned in the class
to share with these kids?
10What did we learn that we could teach the kids?
- Anatomy and Physiology Learning about the
heart, the function of the heart and what can
interfere with heart function. - How can we show them because we learn better by
seeing? Cows heart, hmmm!
11Task Healthy Heart Living
- Exit Outcome Given theory, demonstrations, and
equipment, the student will perform heart healthy
living techniques - Enabling Objectives Given a diagram of the
heart, the cows heart, information on the
structure and function of the heart and lungs and
the life style that will promote healthy heart
living, the student will identify ways to become
heart smart in order to live healthier lives.
12Content Work
- Review the anatomy of the heart and lungs
- Show a cows heart to visualize
- Demonstrate different functions of the heart
- Show what can interfere with the functions of the
heart and what tests can be done for analyzing
function - Demonstration heart model, straw test,
cholesterol test, techniques to be heart smart,
cracker rub
13Academic Standards
- Pennsylvania academic standards
- English
- Math
- Science
- 3.7.1.2,1.1.11, 1.4.11D, 1.6.11A through E,
1.8.11, 2.11.8
14Essential questions and Concepts
- What do you think of when you hear someone
mention heart attack? - What does the heart look like and how does it
function? - What prevents the heart from functioning the way
that it should? - What can you do to prevent cholesterol buildup?
- Where does cholesterol come from?
- What is healthy heart living?
15Instruction
- What will be the most effective way for a student
to learn this concept. Lets put them through
the test. - Let them do the cracker rub, the straw breathing
test, let them actually see the amount of fat in
their body and review the impact of the food that
they may be eating and help them analyze the fat
content. - Lets find their target heart zone and exercise!
16Resources
- American Heart Association

17Heart Healthy Caring
18Its your life now! Whats your choice?
- Eat healthy
- Exercise
- Dont smoke
- Develop eustress not distress
19THE ROAD TO A HEALTHY HEART
20Your diet
- Fats unsaturated better than saturated and trans
- Limit fat intake to 40 grams/day
- Decrease salt intake
- Eat in moderation
- Omega 3 fish oils
- Fruits Vegetables
21When does cholesterol start building up?
- Research has found that cholesterol starts to
build in our vessels in the teenage years - What is cholesterol?
- What should the level of blood cholesterol in our
system? - Cholesterol blocks the blood flow in our vessels.
What will happen then.
22Tools for better understanding
- Cracker rub for fats
- Use of the doppler for blood flow of the heart
- Brainstorm where the students most popular place
for fast foods. Have samples of the nutritional
analysis of each place and let them read how much
fat there is in the product
23Other class involvement
- Healthy Cooking demonstration by Culinary Arts
- Demonstrate how to reduce fats when cooking or
alternative to fats - Samples of healthy snacks that kids can make
having them analyze the nutritional analysis of
the snack thus incorporating math standards.
24- Joshua Arndt, LCTI Culinary Arts Graduate
- National Vocational-Technical Honor Society
Member - NVTHS President 2002 2003
- American Culinary Federation Junior Member
25Smoking and You!
- What is so bad in cigarettes? Lets name a few
because there is over 4000 toxic chemicals!
Chemistry standards involvement - Arsenic rat poison
- Acetone found in nail polish remover
- Carbon monoxide poisonous gas
- Formaldehyde embalm dead bodies
- Hydrogen Cyanide poison used in gas chambers
- Naphthalene used to make explosives
26Impact of Smoking on the Heart
- Review the anatomy of the lungs and its function
- Explain how smoking affects the lungs
- Explain the effects of emphysema on a person
- Have the students do the straw test
- Show the students their oxygen content with a
pulse oximeter and the impact if they smoke or if
they are the victim of second hand smoking
27Exercise
- Make exercise fun get the family involved
- 30 minutes a day for 4 to 6 days in a week
- Take their target heart zone to determine their
effectiveness subtract your age from 220 and
divide by 6. During exercise your heart should
work at 60 65 of the maximum rate for
mid-level training. For top level training, your
heart should work between 70 85
28How did we incorporate the standards?
- First, Learning needs to be fun in order to
retain. - Science anatomy of the heart and lungs using
the cows heart, doppler, pulse oximeter,
analysis of the diets and chemicals needed for a
cigarette - Math Calculating fat intake in the nutritional
analysis of food, target heart zone calculations - English Preparing the presentation, public
speaking
29Feedback from the kids
- I really learned a lot and your students
inspired me to look at food labels. Now I am
going to try to take better care of myself. When
I got home, I told everyone what we did! - I didnt know there was so much to learn about
the heart. The devices helped me to really
understand the heart and lungs. I appreciate
you coming here. What you do is so amazing! - I didnt know how unhealthy cholesterol was!
30Its Your Life Now! Whats Your Choice?
- You make some decisions with your heart,
- Others with your mind!
- But every step you take
- Affects your life!
- Look which way you are going
- Think
- Eat Healthy, Exercise, and Dont Smoke
31Its Your Life Now!
- You can make the right decision
- Think Smart!
- Eat Heart Healthy!
- Play Heart Healthy!
- And
- LIVE YOUR LIFE NOW.HEART HAPPY!
