Title:
1Ich bin ein Berliner!- John F. Kennedy, 1963
- Memories of Berlin and Potsdam
- By Becky Smith
- Libr 500 Foundations of Information Technology
2In April 2007, I traveled to Berlin and Potsdam.
- While there I learned about
- the Second World War
- Former East Berlin
- the Berlin Wall, and
- Potsdam
This is the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. It
was destroyed during the Second World War but its
remnants were kept as a reminder. Beside it is
part of the new church.
3The Victory Column
- This Column was built to commemorate various
German victories. - It was made taller and moved to its current
location by the Nazis in 1938. - The Bronze figure is named Victoria.
- After uploading these pictures to my computer, I
found that
4Victoria has real wings!
5The Brandenburg Gate
Can you see the Victory Column?
The figure on top is called the Quadriga.
6The Quadriga has only been removed from the
Brandenburg Gate Twice.
It was removed first by Napoleon, then after it
was damaged as the Berlin Wall fell.
7Former East Berlin
- Here are two symbols of East Berlin the red Town
Hall and the Television Tower. - Tourists can visit both and the television Tower
has a revolving restaurant.
8The World Time Clock
- It has 24 divisions for the time zones
- the numbers in the middle rotate.
- The top and bottom strips have the names of
important cities in the Northern and Southern
Hemispheres grouped by time zone. - The left arrow shows Vancouver. The right arrow
shows Halifax.
9Memorial of the Berlin Wall
This is a portion of the Berlin Wall which has
been turned into a memorial. Notice the no-mans
land between the concrete.
10Checkpoint Charlie American border crossing along
the Wall
Even though this is in Germany, the German
warning is the last and smallest on the sign.
11East-side Gallery
This is a 1.3km long section of the Berlin wall
which still has much of its artwork, albeit with
graffiti.
12Potsdam Place
These new buildings were built after the wall
came down. This area was a wasteland before they
were built.
13The Bridge between East West
This bridge joins former West Berlin with Potsdam
in former East Germany.
It was divided by the wall and the work to paint
it was even divided.
As a result this bridge is two different colors
of green!
14Potsdam
- Location of the Potsdam Conference in 1945.
- At the conference Churchill, Truman and Stalin
discussed the future of Germany. - Today it is a museum and hotel.
15Sanssouci
The French name for this German palace means
without cares.
16The Brandenburg Gate
- Do you think Ive got the name wrong?
- No, there are two (Berlin and Potsdam)
- This one is the older of the two!
