16 June 1976 the aftermath
  • 16 June 2006 at 7 am joined President Mbeki and
hundreds of others to commemorate the 1976 Soweto
    students protest march
  • In 1976, the Soweto students faced the might of
the armed Apartheid Police force. In 2006, the
Police formed a guard of honour all along the
    march route.
  • 1976 was a defining moment for the South
African Youth and it took some form of
    transformational leadership by Tsietsi
    Mashinini.
  • Mashinini was head of the Soweto Student
    Representative Council (SSRC).

4
Leadership as a Concept
  • The quality of leadership in the SSRC was such
that it managed to mobilise the young students of
Soweto to come to a march, using only word of-
    mouth communication.
  • Leadership is not a new phenomenon. Matthew 1514
says, If the blind lead the blind, both shall
    fall into the ditch.
  • Characteristics of a good leader are, according
    to experts, as follows
  • Ability to influence people
  • Charisma
  • Oratory skills
  • Confidence to lead
  • Visionary

5
Types of Leadership
  • Appointed leaders, eg the Pope, President
    Mbeki, Bishop Tutu etc.
  • Born leaders, or those who emerge as leaders
eg Mandela, Dalai Lama, Tsietsi Mashinini

Famous quote Some are born great, some achieve
greatness and some have greatness thrust upon
them.

Cont.
  • Steven Covey, Seven Habits of Highly Successful
People talks of People Centred Leadership.
  • One thing leaders have in common are willing
    followers
  • According to Jesse Jackson, leaders have a
unifying effect Leaders do not choose sides,
    but bring sides together.
  • Leadership differs from management in that it is
about ROLE and not merely POSITION.
  • The concept of shared leadership, remains a
fallacy. In the real world, few lead and the rest
    follow.
