Guide to the WKCE Translation Accommodation
Narrations
  • In Hmong and Spanish
  • Fall 2007

What youll need
The translation accommodation narrations are
Mediasite presentations which contain audio
linked to images of pages in the WKCE test book.
Students will record their answers in their WKCE
test book. To view a presentation, a student will
need a computer with
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer v5.5 or higher
  • Windows Media Player v6.4 or higher
  • At least 16MB of RAM
  • Speakers or Headphones
  • Mediasite presentations are viewed with Microsoft
    Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. 
    Often problems in viewing a presentation are
    resolved with updates to Windows Media Player,
    drivers or codecs.

Plan ahead
  • Learn how to operate Mediasite before
    administering the test.
  • Always run a test presentation on the computer
    you plan to use before the actual time of
    testing.

Prepare students
  • Familiarize students with using the translation
    accommodation narration before live testing.
  • Sample presentations for use by test
    administrators and students are available at

  • Narrated release items are available in Spanish,
  • Hmong, and English for grades 3, 6 and 10

Find a presentation
  • Presentations on the source CD are in nested
    folders organized by (in order)
  • Language (Hmong or Spanish)
  • Grade (e.g., 3)
  • Content area (e.g., Mathematics)
  • Session (e.g., 1) Form (e.g., A)
  • The test form is printed in the lower right
    corner of the front cover of the WKCE test book.

Start a presentation
  • To view the Mediasite presentation open the
    desired session form and click on

  • LaunchPresentation.html
  • The presentation starts automatically.
  • The Supporting Files folder contains the files
    needed by the presentation and can be ignored.

Use the control panel
  • At the top of the small video window are controls
    to
  • pause the video
  • move the slider bar to advance through the
    presentation
  • stop the video
  • mute the sound.

Control the volume
  • There are two places in the software to control
    the volume
  • The Mediasite control panel
  • The computer volume control
  • If a student experiences difficulty hearing
    presentations, please check the volume icon on
    his or her desktop.
  • On a PC this icon is typically located in the
    bottom right hand corner of the screen and looks
    like a speaker.
  • Note This icon may be hidden. Use the arrows to
    open hidden icons.

Pause the presentation
  • The video can be paused by clicking on the pause
    button ( ).
  • Students may use this feature to allow themselves
    adequate time for responding to questions.
  • Extra time is an allowable accommodation
    (Assessment Matrix, 50)

Enlarge the view
  • Students may also view presentations full-screen
    by clicking the symbol( )in the lower
    right-hand corner of the slide.
  • To return to the original view, click on the word
    Close in the top right hand corner of the
    screen. (Dont click on the X in the blue menu
    bar it will close the presentation.)

Ways to view a presentation
  • Students may use the accommodation in several
    ways
  • Option 1 Go through the test page by page, in
    order. (default)
  • Option 2 Select a page and listen to the
    questions on that page.
  • Option 3 Move forward or backward to a desired
    slide.

Select a page
  • Using option 2
  • Click on the thumbnails icon ( )
  • Select a page.
  • Click on the play from this slide icon the
    triangle in the lower right corner of the
    thumbnail.
  • Using option 3
  • Use the direction arrows ( , ) to move to the
    desired page. The page will begin playing
    automatically.

Monitor student progress
  • Monitor students progress to ensure that they
    are on the correct session, and that the title of
    the presentation matches the session in the
    students test book. The presentation title is
    located directly below the video control panel.
