The Life Cycle

• Just like a human, the butterfly goes through a
  cycle, or different stages in life.
  
• The order of these events are extremely
  important.
  
• The butterflys life cycle is similar to ours.
• Baby
• Toddler
• Teenager
• Adult

A little egg lay on a leaf.

• The first stage of the life cycle is the egg.
• The egg is the size of a pencil point.
• It is a tiny, round, oval, or cylindrical
  object.
  
• Attached to leaves, stems, or other objects that
  may be caterpillar food.

The tiny caterpillar emerges from the egg.

• When it hatches, it eats its shell.
• The caterpillar has an interesting pattern of
  stripes and patches.
  
• It may have spine-like hairs.
• This is also called the larva stage.

Time to eat!

• The tiny caterpillar eats as much as possible.
• It first eats its eggshell then eats leaves.
• The caterpillar grows a tremendous amount!
• It then looks for a place to change.

The chrysalis is formed

• The caterpillar sheds its skin and becomes a
  pupa.
  
• The hard outer shell is called the chrysalis.
• Inside the chrysalis, the pupa is changing from a
  caterpillars body to a butterflys body.
  
• At first, the chrysalis is light green.
• Later on, it changes to clear and you can
  actually see the butterfly.

and out comes a beautiful butterfly!

• When the butterfly emerges, it looks for a mate.
• After mating, the butterfly lays eggs and the
  life cycle starts all over again.
  
• Butterflies do not eat they drink nectar from
  their straw-like proboscis.
  
• A butterflys life span is only two weeks long.
