Title: Scientific Method

1
Scientific Method
  • A collaboration between Soulja Boy Mr. Cottone

2
6 Parts
  • Purpose
  • Hypothesis
  • Introduction
  • Materials Methods
  • Results
  • Discussion

3
Calisthenics 8/26/12
  • U use scientific method everytime you meet
someone. Science is really just a pursuit of
    knowledge. Think about yesterdays experiment.
Other than a graph, what parts would you use on a
    first date?
  • Parts
  • Purpose
  • Hypothesis
  • Intro
  • Materials and Methods
  • Results
  • Discussion

4
Purpose
  • Answers the question, WHY am I doing this
    experiment?
  • This is the whole reason why you are doing an
    experiment.
  • Hint If you dont know the purpose, dont do the
    experiment.

5
Hypothesis
  • Question- WHAT do I think will happen and WHY,
    Natedawg?
  • Educated guess.
  • Not eenie meenie minie moe!
  • Hint At the end, you should be able to prove it
    True or False.

6
Introduction
  • Question- WHAT do I know already?
  • NOT what do you think.
  • Introduces someone else to the important parts of
    your experiment.
  • Hint Paragraph form.

7
Materials Methods
  • Question- WHAT do I have and WHAT do I do?
  • This part is easy and usually is given to you.
  • Hint Read over before doing experiment.

8
Results
  • Question- WHAT did I test?
  • This part includes Graphs, Tables, and
    Observations.
  • Hint Set up tables ahead of time to record
    quicker.

9
Discussion
  • Question- WHY did I see what I saw?
  • Most important part.
  • Can suggest experiments or errors here too
    (paragraph form).
  • Hint Back it up with facts.

10
Calisthenics (8/27)
  • Write in slot 2 of your sheet.
  • What is the average of the following set 76
    73 62 75
  • What is wrong with the graph below?

D vs. T
Average
Time
Distance
11
Control
  • Question- How do I know Im doing it right?
  • You know what the outcome should be before you do
    it.
  • to check or regulate
  • a standard of comparison
  • Hint Most experiments have one.

13
Independent Dependent Variables
  • Questions-
  • Which variable do I manipulate or change myself?
  • Which variable am I measuring?

14
Independent Dependent Variables
  • Independent (x-axis)
  • The variable that is purposely changed
  • i.e. time (it changes regardless of the
    experiment)
  • Dependent (y-axis)
  • Influenced by the independent variable.
  • i.e. distance (when you walk, how far you go
depends on how much time you have.

15
Graphing
  • T.A.I.L.S.
  • Title
  • Be specific about what is in your graph
  • Dont just write distance vs. time
  • Axis
  • Independent Variable (Y)Dependent (X)
  • Interval
  • Each grid line must change by the same amount
  • Labels
  • Concept and Unit
  • Scale
  • Did you use the entire space provided?

16
Graphing
  • What is wrong with this picture?
  • What is right with it?

17
Safety
  • Question- AM I GOING TO BE OKAY?
  • Right to Know Law
  • Behavior
  • Location of safety items.
  • Hint Follow Instructions and You will be fine.
