Title: DEBATE

1
DEBATE!
2
Scenario 1
  • You are a relatively popular student at your
high school. Your friend from childhood happens
to be less popular than you, but you still remain
friends. Lately, however, your friend has been
being bullied and harassed by another group of
popular students in your grade. As you are
walking to class you witness your friend being
bullied, do you stick up for him and risk your
popularity or do you let him fend for himself in
    order to save face?

3
Scenario 2
  • Your best friend has just told you a very
horrible secret that no one else knows but you.
The secret your friend shared with you has taken
a toll on his health and caused his parents to
become concerned. Do you keep this secret to save
your friend and yourself from humiliation or
trouble or do you tell someone even if it means
you may have to face consequences for not telling
    anyone sooner?

4
Scenario 3
  • Youre driving out of the parking lot one day
after school and you accidentally graze the
bumper of another car which leaves a tiny scrape.
You dont think that anyone has seen you do
this. What do you do? Drive away and pretend it
never happened or leave a note for the owner of
    the car?

5
Scenario 4
  • Erica and Billy, two of your close friends, have
been dating for a year. While at the movies one
weekend, you see Billy there holding hands with
another girl. Billy doesnt see you. Do you
tell Erica, who is away visiting relatives, and
risk losing your friendship with Billy? Or do
you keep it to yourself and keep both of your
    friends?

6
Scenario 5
  • Youve been studying all week for an important
test. You need to get an A on the test to bring
up your grade. If you do not bring up your
grade, you will be grounded for the weekend by
your parents. During the test, your mind goes
completely blank and you cannot remember the
answers. You know how important that it is that
you get an A though so that you can go out with
your friends. Sitting to your right is the class
genius who always gets As. Do you discretely
copy his answers? Or do you keep your eyes on
your own test and risk failing the test on which
you needed to get an A?

7
Scenario 6
  • Youre pulled over one afternoon for speeding.
Because you were going way over the speed limit,
your ticket is 135. You want to pay off the
tickets before your parents find out because they
have threatened to take away your car if you get
a ticket, but you dont have that kind of money
since you do not have a job. Do you take the
money from your parents and hope that they do not
notice? Or do you tell your parents about the
ticket, ask for their help in paying for it, and
risk have your car taken away?

8
Scenario 7
  • You were at a party that got busted by the
police. All of your friends got in trouble for
underage drinking, but you hid and were not
found. Your friends are in deep trouble with the
law, with the school, and at home. Your friends
have told you though that they will not rat on
you and that it is up to you to confess the
truth. Do you confess to your parents and to the
authorities that you were at the party, too, and
face-up to the consequences? Or do you risk
losing your friends by remaining quiet but
keeping the respect of your parents, teachers,
    and community?

Ethical Scenarios
  • Suppose you are a sales clerk in a store and some
of your friends want you to let them shoplift.
  • If you refused to let them shoplift, would that
    make you a disloyal friend?
  • If they shoplift despite your objections, what
    would you do?
  • Many people think you cant get ahead being
honest. Do you agree or disagree?

17
Ethical Scenarios
  • Suppose you are working in a store on commission
and have a customer who knows nothing about the
product she is buying. You sense she will buy

23
Concluding Questions
  • How often do you think about whether something is
right or wrong before you make a choice?
