  • Resveratrol possesses antioxidant properties
    and reduces ROS generation In blond platelets.
    During platelet activation, ROS are produced in
    the receptor-mediated signalling pathways due to
    arachidonic acid metabolism by cyclooxygenaze or
    lipoxygenase, the glutathione cycle, metabolizm
    of phosphoinositides and due to xanthine oxidase
    and NADPH oxidase. ROS induce changes in
    intraplatelet Ca2 and may behave as second
    messenger in thrombin- or collagen-activated
    platelets. ROS generation has been proposed as
    critical signals in regulating of platelet
    activity.

  • The use of the chemiluminescence method for
    assessing the level of reactive oxygen species in
    platelets and the method of reduction of
    cytochrome C for the estimation of the level of
    O2- showed that resveratrol at high
    concetrations has antioxidative action on resting
    blood platelets and platelets activated by
    thrombin, TRAP or LPS from Proteus mirabilis.

  • Antioxidtaive action of high concetrations of
    resveratrol can minimise the risk of various
    illness and it my be beneficial in protecting
    against coronary heart diseases when
    hyperactivity of platelets is observed. Frankel
    et al. reported that the ability of wines to
    protect low density lipoproteins LDL from
    oxidation appears to be dependent not only on
    resveratrol but also due to phenolic substances
    abundant in wine. These compounds as antioxidants
    seem to be helpful in inhibiting of LDL
    oxidation and in reducing the incidence of
    coronary heart disease and arteriosclerosis.

  • Resveratrol inhibits lipid peroxidation mainly
    by scavenging peroxyl radicals. There is evidence
    that resveratrol may partly reduce the formation
    of nitrotyrosine in plasma and platelet proteins
    and partly inhibit thiol oxidation in blood
    platelets treated with exogenous peroxynitrite
    ONOO- yields 30-35 of carbonate radical CO3-
    and nitrogen dioxide NO2, which are also strong
    oxidants phenols are the efficient scavengers of
    CO3- and NO2.

  • Resveratrol may augment antioxidative
    properties of orther dietary agents, e.g., a
    combination of resveratrol and vitamin C has been
    shown to exhibit greater protective activity
    against oxidative stress in cells than any of the
    antioxidants alone. Moreover, we did not observe
    any synergistic action of resveratrol and vitamin
    C on oxidative stress in blood platelets.
