Defining Streaming Media

• Audio and Video files that play through the
  Internet
• Compression technology allows for a size
  reduction to make it possible
• Files can be on servers across the Internet or
  locally on your Intranet (video servers)

Streaming

• File can start playing before it is completely
  downloaded (will need to buffer first)
• File could be downloaded completely and saved
  locally before playing
• Saved locally (archived) for later playback
• Taping can be broadcast live to your computer
  over the Internet

Why digital media?

• Stop, start, jump, edit, snip, etc.
• Accessible by most Internet computers
• Searchable database of titles
• On demand and spur-of-the-moment

Bandwidth, Bandwidth, Bandwidth

• Must flow over regular traffic and must take
  priority (Quality of Service - QOS)
• i.e. VoIP (Voice over IP)
• Cant tolerate network congestion, slow or bad
  connection (latency)
• T1, ISDN, Cable Modem, (probably not 56Kb modem)
• 1 minute of video 1.8 mb of memory (over one
  floppy disk of space)

• Bandwidth (Kids, dont try this at home!)
• Plugin(s) needed
• QuickTime
• Real Player
• Windows Media Player
• Plugin installs into your browser and decodes and
  plays the audio/video files
