In Reception we have been learning about HOT
countries

• We used Handas Surprise by Eileen Brown to help
  us!

Our objectives
To learn about other environments and increase
their awareness of the world. To create a simple
story map. To use the Bee-bots to follow a
simple story map. To make comparisons of their
environment with another.

In our groups we shared the story of Handas
Surprise.
We talked about the country the story was set in,
the animals that lived there and why the fruits
featured in the story grew there.

Some of us role played the story
One of us played Handa
and some of us pretended to be the cheeky
animals from the story!!

We sequenced the main events from the story
In our groups we worked as a team to order the
pictures from the story from start to finish it
was tricky remembering each animal and the fruit
they took!

We then had to make a story map
We had to draw each of the main events from the
story onto our map in the correct sequence to
show our understanding of the events in the story.

We used the bee-bots too
First we had to order the pictures from the story
correctly onto our bee-bot map
Then our teacher challenged us to direct the
bee-bot to different events in the story.

Some of us event got to make fruit salad!!!
We brought in the fruits mentioned in the Handas
Surprise story. The children then handled, peeled
and chopped the fruits to make their own
individual fruit salad.

Then we got to taste it!!!
