• A poem of 17 syllables and 3 lines
• 1st and 3rd line have 5 syllables
• 2nd line has 7 syllables
• Syllable beat
• example syll-ab-le (3 syllables)

What makes them poetry?

• The ideas are compressed into the smallest form
  possible
• The author has to choose their words very
  carefully
• Influence by Buddhism simplicity
• Usually focus on nature
• Author creates an IMAGE with words
