- Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Plan Act
authorizes MCH Councils - 1991 - Started Local efforts toward an Otero County MCH
Council - 1996 - Funding by DOH for Otero MCH Council - 1998
- Changed scope/name Otero County Community
Health Council - 2001
5Why was OCCHC started?
OCCHC
- To assess the health care and community needs of
our county (Community Health Profile). - To develop a comprehensive referral network for
community services. - To avoid duplication of services.

- To foster collaboration to accomplish more with
available resources. - To bring the Community together in grass roots
efforts. - To positively influence the health of Otero
County (Community Health Plan).

- The mission of the Otero County Community Health
Council is to assess, promote, and enhance the
health and well being of county residents by
creating a process that encourages broad-based
community involvement.

OCCHC
- The Otero County Community Health Council will be
the officially recognized entity through which
health related issues, programs, and grants are
coordinated. This will be best accomplished by
providing an environment that fosters countywide
involvement and true collaboration.

- Health is understood to mean both well-being and
the absence of illness and other health problems. - Health is influenced by many factors (social,
personal, environmental, economic) - Health is inter-related with a wide range of
human service issues and needs. - Many different individuals and entities can and
should play a role in maintaining and improving
health in the community.
