Project types

• Remodeling or demolition of one, two and three
  family dwellings-gt20,000.00
• Roofing Tear-offs. (All projects regardless of
  cost)
• Exempt Projects which only require a plumbing,
  HVAC or electrical permit.
• A project for which a building or demolition
  permit is not required (interior painting,
  flooring replacements, some handyman repairs,
  etc)

Materials Required to be Recycled

• Clean wood (no painted, stained or varnished
  wood)
• Clean metals
• Clean drywall scraps
• Cardboard
• Asphalt shingles

Markets for Waste

• (Materials must be free of lead and asbestos and
  other toxins)
• Second SeasonDrive your own truck to facility
• Co-mingled dumpstersThrow-in-one container
• Cardboard
• Metals
• Clean Wood
• Drywall
• Asphalt shingles (better to have separate
  container)
• Talk to your waste hauler for details

Compliance

• Effective January 1, 2010
• Multiple projects in a year (must be
  pre-authorized by the City)
• Easiest method
• Either If you use City Certified recycling
  center (co-mingled dumpsters) Submit one
  certificate of compliance for all jobs with a
  summary of weight tickets for each project by
  12/31 of calendar year
• Or Proof of LEED or GBH certification for
  project
• More Difficult method
• Create list of debris and where and how it was
  recycled
• Actual or estimated volume or weight tickets from
  recycling facility
• Statement of compliance
• Keep all records for two (2) years

Penalties

• Not less than 50.00 nor more than 500.00 for
  the first ton not recycled or re-used.
• Not less than 100 nor more than 1000.00 for
  each additional ton.
• Additional penalties up to 1000.00 for false
  submittals

required by the ordinance

• Certain types of carpet and pad--Coyle Carpet,
  Sergenians and other companies will take old
  carpet and padTalk to them directly
• Certain Plastics
• Glass
• Clean Concrete.
• Wingra Stone (271-5555),
• Mandt Sandfill (835-5858),
• Northwestern Stone (836-1701).  (Northwestern
  Stone and Mandt Sandfill will also take bricks)

Stuff to reuse or give away

• Trim
• Cabinets (use in the laundry or basement)
• Hardwood flooring
• Existing doors
• Cabinets/countertops
• Appliances less than 10 years old
• Windows, on occasion
• Plumbing and light Fixtures
• Really good lumber

Best Practices-

• RRR- Reduce/Reuse/Recycle
• Plan ahead/Good Design minimizes waste
• Smart design for adaptive re-use
• Separate aluminum, copper, etc for beer money
• Hire subcontractor specializing in deconstruction
• Habitat Restore will come out to job site to
  remove valuable material on certain projects

• Use Panelized construction
• Create a Market for all of this recycled stuff in
  the world Purchase materials with recycled
  content.
• Purchase used building materials from Restore or
  other sources
• Think Cradle-to-Cradle Specify new materials
  which can be easily recycled at the end of their
  life expectancy.
