Climbing Mount Everest
  • What was the dream of every mountaineer ?
  • Ever since it was discovered in 1852 that Mount
Everest was the highest mountain in the world ,
climbers have wanted to get to the top of it . To
be the first person to stand on the summit of
Mount Everest was the dream of mountaineers for
    many years .

3
  • What were the main difficulties about
    climbing Mount Everest ?
  • There were three main difficulties in
climbing Mount Everest . The first was in getting
to the mountain itself. Mount Everest lies in the
border between Nepal and Tibet. Both countries
were closed to foreigners for years at a time. It
was not until 1920 that Tibet allowed British
climbers to enter their country to climb Mount
Everest from the Tibetan side . And it wasn't
until 1950 that Nepal allowed climbers in to
climb the mountain from the Nepalese side .
  • The second difficulty was the effects of
altitude on the human body. We all need oxygen to
breathe, but the amount of oxygen in the air
decreases the higher we go above sea level. Above
8,000 meters there is so little oxygen that
    people cant breathe properly .

4
  • It was thought that if people stayed above
that higher for a long time, they would get stick
and eventually die. Because of this, many
climbers have carried cylinders of oxygen to help
    overcome altitude sickness.
  • The third problem was the weather . Because it
is so high, the weather on Mount Everest is
always very cold and usually very windy too. The
wind can blow away the climbers tents and the
cold can freeze their hands and feet .

5
Ask and answer
  • 1. When were foreign climbers allowed to enter
  • Tibet ?
  • Nepal ?
  • 2. Why cant people breathe properly above 8,000
    meters ?
  • 3. What do you think a cylinder looks like ?
  • 4. How can the climate on Mount Everest affect
    climbers ?
  • 5. Would you like to climb a mountain. If yes,
    why? If no, why no?
