Title: Fee hikes are creating an enrollment crisis

1
Fee hikes are creating an enrollment crisis
  • Many campuses are struggling and failing to meet
enrollment targets, even though CSU enrollment
was projected to be stronger than the 2.5 per
    year.
  • (examples follow)

2
In fall 05, 15 campuses had lower enrollments
than in previous years
  • At CSU East Bay, enrollment was the lowest since
    1994
  • At Humboldt State, enrollment was the lowest
    since 1996
  • At CSU Dominguez Hills, enrollment was lowest
    since 1999
  • At 3 campuses, enrollment was lowest since 2001
    (Chico, Los Angeles, San Diego)

3
Fee Increases Halt Enrollment Growth in the CSU
Fees Have Increased Each Year since 2002

Executive compensation trade-offs
6
If you have a 1.5 billion funding shortfall, but
still managed to find 1,178,892 to spend you
could
  • Increase executive salaries by 13.7
  • Increase presidential car allowances to 1,000
    per month
  • and
  • Increase presidential housing allowances to
    50,000 and 60,000 per year

7
Or, you might
  • Add 262 more class sections
  • Help 10,000 students get a class they need to
    graduate
  • Provide additional work for 262 temporary faculty
    members who work part-time
  • Reduce the size of over-enrolled courses
  • Estimate based on an average cost of 4,500 per
    course

8
Or, you might
  • Provide 1,380 more EOP grants to low-income and
    educationally disadvantaged students
  • Prevent students from having to take 2nd or 3rd
jobs when fees go up (again)
  • Estimate based on average EOP grant amount of
    854

9
Or, you might
  • Administer 663 more State University Grants to
    students who need them
  • Provide financial aid to some of the 19,202 CSU
students who qualify for Competitive Cal Grants
    but do not receive them
  • Decrease the amount of debt students will carry
    when they graduate
  • Estimate based on average SUG amount of 1,178
