of urban school educators and students - Educate the public about the accomplishments and
potential of urban schools - Provide a concrete benchmark of excellence that
motivates reform efforts and - Deepen the knowledge base of best practices for
promoting urban school transformation.

- Nominees from Chief State School Officers
- Nominees from major urban superintendents
- Urban National Blue Ribbon School Winners
- Urban National Title I Distinguished Schools
4All Finalists Met These Criteria
- At least 50 of students met low-income criteria
- No selective admissions criteria
- Exceeded AYP criteria in 2003-04 and 2004-05
- In 2004-05, met AYP criteria for school years
2005-06 2006-07 - At least 92 percent average daily attendance in
both 2003-04 and 2004-05 - A high cohort graduation rate for every major
demographic group of students - A low suspension/expulsion rate
- Other strong evidence of academic excellence
