Title: Poetry In Motion
1Poetry In Motion
- A Unit on Poetry
- By Mary Lou Morris
2Poetry In MotionPoetry is a special form of
writing
- Poetry speaks to the heart as well as to the
mind
- Poetry says a lot in a few words
- Poetry says things in special ways
3Poetry looks different
- Poetry is written in lines and stanzas (groups of
lines) - I look in the mirror
- And what do I see?
- I see an image of someone
- That looks a little like me.
- Could it be the face
- Or maybe the hair?
- I know who it is not
- Its my great-great grandma Claire.
- -Phil Ryan
4Poetry speaks to the heart as well as to the mind
- You can like a poem for how it makes you feel
(the heart part) - You can like a poem for what it says (the mind
part) - The heart part it what separates poetry from
other writing
5Poetry says a lot in a few words
- Graham Cracker
- sensory poems
- Brown with small holes with a sugary sweet
smell. - Listen for the crunchy, crispy munch as it is
eaten. - With a good honey cinnamon taste,
- it has rough edges like a desert.
6Poetry says things in special ways
Imagine a snail As big as a
whale, Imagine a lark As big as a
shark, Imagine a bee As big as a
tree, Imagine a toad As long as a
road, Imagine a hare As big as a
chair, Imagine a goat As long as a
boat And a flea the same size as me
Poets create special word pictures by
comparing different things. Such as similes and
metaphors

7Poetry pleases the ear
Be wary of the loathsome troll that
slyly lies in wait to drag you to his dingy
hole and put you on his plate. His
blood is black and boiling hot, He gurgles
ghastly groans. He'll cook you in his dinner
pot, your skin, your flesh, your bones.
He'll catch your arms and clutch your legs
and grind you to a pulp, then swallow you
like scrambled eggs - gobble! gobble! gulp!
So watch your steps when next you go
upon a pleasant stroll, or you might end up
in the pit below as supper for the troll.
- Poets repeat certain consonant and vowel sounds
to help make the poem pleasing to the ear
