Honor Thy Father and Mother
  • Relationship with your Parents
  • Presented By Nancy L. Vidad
  • January 21, 2007

2
Honor Thy Father and Mother
  • "Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days
may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God
    giveth thee," Exodus 2012.
  • "Honor thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy
God hath commanded thee that thy days may be
prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in
the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee,"
    Deuteronomy 516.
  • "Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his
    father . . . ," Leviticus 193.

3
Honor Thy Father and Mother
  • "Children, obey your parents in the Lord for
this is right. Honor thy father and thy mother
which is the first commandment with promise That
it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live
long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not
your children to wrath but bring them up in the
nurture and admonition of the Lord," Ephesians
    61-4.
  • "A foolish son is the calamity of his father,"
    Proverbs 1913

4
Honor Thy Father and Mother
  • The fifth commandment affects everybody since
    every person has parents.
  • It says that children must honor them even if
    they are not honorable.
  • Even if your parents are despicable, they can be
a vivid lesson to you as how NOT to act, causing
    you to act much better.
  • There is an old saying, "Like father, like son."
It is often true that children who are abused
often turn around and abuse their own children.
  • Only with the Holy Spirit can we break this
vicious circle and change to the right ways.

5
Honor Thy Father and Mother
  • The fifth commandment is the first with a
promise a long and happy life. It points to the
divine family of God and living forever in one
    big happy family.
  • It bridges the gap between the first four
commandments (love to God) and the last six
    commandments (love to neighbor).
  • If we dont honor/love our parents, how can we
    honor/love our Heavenly Father?
  • Our concept of God is based on our relationship
    with our parents.

6
Honor Thy Father and Mother
  • Beginning in infancy and throughout early
childhood, our images of God are formed and are
based not only on what we are told about God, but
also on the love we receive or fail to receive
from those who care for us.
  • Caring parents set limits because we live in a
world in which not everything/everyone is safe
  • If a toddler does not learn and accept the limits
that loving parents set, they can become consumed
with anger at the idea of not having their own
    way
  • They become perennially disgruntled and
frequently at odds with those in authority

7
Honor Thy Father and Mother
  • In the eyes of the toddler, the parents are
    surrogates for God
  • But if parents fail to be supportive and
    protectively limiting the childs independence,
    the result can either be
  • A timid, self-doubting child or
  • A child who angrily resists and opposes any limits

8
Honor Thy Father and Mother
  • You may think,
  • "I was treated so badly when I was a child that I
cant have love for my parents or anyone else."
  • "I dont have time to visit my parents or any of
the elderly because I'm too busy.
  • God states no qualifier. He does not tell us to
honor them only if they are honorable.
  • Simply because they are our parents, we must
    treat them with respect.

9

treat with honor or respect b to confer honor
    on

Jesus and His Parents
  • John 21-11 Jesus Changes Water to Wine
  • 1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana
in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus
and his disciples had also been invited to the
wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother
said to him, "They have no more wine."
  •  4 "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus
replied, "My time has not yet come."
  •  5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever
    he tells you."
  •  6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind
used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each
holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

11
Jesus and His Parents
  • 7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with
water" so they filled them to the brim.
  • 8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take
it to the master of the banquet." They did so, 9
and the master of the banquet tasted the water
that had been turned into wine. He did not
realize where it had come from, though the
servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he
called the bridegroom aside 10 and said,
"Everyone brings out the choice wine first and
then the cheaper wine after the guests have had
too much to drink but you have saved the best
    till now."

12
Jesus and His Parents
  • 11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus
performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed
his glory, and his disciples put their faith in
    him.
  • As a mother, this is a humorous story for me.
  • It was not Jesus time to be publicly performing
miracles yet, but he honors His mother by doing
    what she requested.
  • Not only does he do what she asks, He goes over
and above (110 effort) by filling the stone jars
to the brim with the best tasting wine.

13
Jesus and His Parents
  • He probably performed His first miracle, despite
it being the wrong place and time, because
  • Mary was probably related or very close to the
    married couple or their families
  • Weddings back then lasted a week and it being
only the third day would have been very
embarrassing to the hosts, Marys family
  • She obviously have seen Him do little miracles
before and so she knows He can do this
  • She expected Him to do something
  • She already instructed the servants to obey Him

14
Jesus and His Parents
  • In John 1926-27, Jesus shows love and concern
for His mother in one of His final actions as a
    human being.
  • Jesus undoubtedly had a lot on His mind the
unbelievable pain and exhaustion He felt the way
He had been mistreated the need not to sin in
His final moments His upcoming victory, etc.
  • However, in this most traumatic time, He still
showed love, respect and responsibility for Mary
  • With the last of His strength He lovingly asked
His best friend, John, to take care of her.

15
Jesus and His Parents
  • Little is said about Jesus relationship with His
    Earth father, Joseph.
  • Joseph was probably older than Mary and died
    earlier.
  • However, Jesus becoming a carpenter shows He
honored His Earth father by continuing in his
    footstep.
  • Everyone knew Him as Josephs, the carpenter, son
