Inspiration
  • The first principle of true teaching is that
nothing can be taught Sri Aurobindo
  • A nation is advanced in proportion as
education and intelligence spread among the
    masses
  • We want that education, by which character is
formed strength of mind is increased, the
intellect is expanded and by which one can stand
on his feet. It is Man-making education all
    round that we want
  • - Swami Vivekananda

4
Beginning of Activities in Srirampura - An
incident
  • Mallappa was considered a dull boy in the
class. He could not even perform single digit
    addition in school
  • One day he came to a shop, bought 3 kilos of
rice and demanded exact change from the
shopkeeper. The boy who could not perform simple
    addition was performing multiplication and
    subtraction mentally.
  • I called him to my home. Put an arm around him
and told You are intelligent. He was
perplexed. He replied Teacher calls me Dadda'
(Idiot) in school. I can not do sums. I asked
him Will you learn if I teach?. He nodded his
head in affirmative. On that day he not only
learnt single digit addition but also 4 digit
    addition with enthusiasm.
  • The joy of breaking a barrier was all written
    over his face

5
Profile of Day scholars
  • All children are from villages.
  • 16 children are first generation learners.
  • 2 children are school dropouts.
  • One is Physically disabled child
  • 5 childrens parents are economically sound.
    Rest are economically challenged.
  • Educational level of 14 children are below
    average.
  • Environment prevailing at home is not
    edu-friendly

6
Case Study 1 - Bharathi
  • Bharathi was happily staying in Andhra pradesh
    with her parents.
  • But the relationship between parents turned
    sour.
  • Mother came back to her parent's home at Maddur
    of Kollegal Taluk
  • She had two more deaf dumb children apart from
    Bharathi to take care.
  • Due to the pressure of circumstances she put
normal girl Bharathi also into a deaf and dumb
    school
  • In June 2006, her relative brought Bharathi to
Kaliyuva Mane She was just 8 years old

7
Case Study 1 Bharathi (Contd.)
  • When she came, she was emotionally disturbed
  • Often she used to bang her head against the wall
complaining of BLOOD PRESSURE. Always used to
    cry.
  • Now she is happily settled in Kaliyuva Mane.
She is showing lot of interest in studies. She
wants to become an Engineer. She is the most
    enterprising kid of Kaliyuva Mane.

8
Case Study 2 J. Anand
  • Anand's parents belong to socially and
economically backward section of society. He is
the only son to his parents.
  • He was going to a village school. He was not
interested in studies. He was naughty also.
  • Teacher used to scold him. Several times he was
beaten by the teacher. Once Anand took a stone
and threw at his teacher. That was his last day
in school. Due to fear of getting punished by
his teacher he stopped going to school.

9
Case Study 2 J. Anand (Contd.)
  • Parents efforts to put him in school did not
    yield fruit.
  • Then he was grazing sheep for two years.
  • Two years back, parents put him in Kaliyuva Mane
as a day scholar. During first year he was
irregular, very quarrelsome and violent. Even
teacher used to be scared of him.
  • Now he is emotionally fine. He expressed his
desire to join as an inmate and pass S.S.L.C.
examination. He is 13 years old. Now he
    understands lessons faster.

10
Case Study 4 Vishnu G.
  • Vishnu belongs to Socially and Economically
backward family. His parents are illiterates.
His father is a coolie in RMC market. Mother is a
    housewife.
  • Vishnu was not interested in studies used to
attend a village school once in a blue moon. He
    was intelligent.
  • Two years ago Vishnu's brother brought him to
Kaliyuva Mane. At the time of joining he created
lot of fuss. Initially he was not comfortable at
Kaliyuva Mane attempted to run away.
  • As days progressed, he liked the freedom
prevailing here. He was allowed to play marbles,
cricket, Gilli-dandu (a country game ) to his
    hearts content.

11
Case Study 4 Vishnu G. ( Contd.)
  • Last year once in a week we used to send him to
his parents place. Or else he used to become
very dull and inattentive. His learning ability
will be at peak on Mondays and wanes down to
    minimum on Saturdays.
  • Now a days he goes to his parents place once a
    month on his own volition.
  • Now well settled. Shows interest in studies.
He is 13 years old. Narayan plays chess well.
    Loves to play cricket.

12
Case Study 4 Kushi
  • Her mother had come to Divyadeepa for washing
    vessels and clothes.
  • There were 4 children surrounding the mother.
None of them were going to school. Some were
playing. Some were helping their mother.
  • One 10 years old girl was playing on the swing.
Then she had breakfast. She started playing with
the children. While going she expressed her
desire to stay in Kaliyuva Mane
  • Since 6 months she is staying and learning
happily. She dances well. Most compatible kid.

13
Transformation in Childrens attitude Specially
in inmates who are staying since one year
  • Children are happy.
  • Children have developed an urge to study.
Children are eager to learn everything whether
it is English or Kannada, Maths or Science, Arts
or games, milking a cow or clay modeling, music
    or skit.
  • There is an emotional bond among children.
  • Children do physical work also.
  • Team spirit is developing.

14
Character formation Specially in inmates who are
staying since one year
  • Children do not steal.
  • Children have started accepting their mistakes.
  • Children have stopped
  • using foul language.
  • They are gentle with freshers.
  • Children are fearless
  • Concerns
  • Childrens hygiene level has to improve.
  • Superstition should be slowly removed.

15
Reasons for this transformation
  • The infrastructure is not impressive, no
    colourful playgrounds. No proper buildings
  • But what makes children stick around is the
emotions that breed here. (the feelings children
    have in their hearts.)
  • An environment which encourages learning is
prevailing at Kaliyuva Mane. A child is allowed
to discover, explore and expand its knowledge
through a variety of learning experiences.

16
Reasons for transformation (Contd.)
  • Involvement of VAYAM Karthavya group of
volunteers - These volunteers have developed
long lasting emotional rapport with children.
Children will be longing to meet these young
Annas and Akkas. (Brothers and sisters) These
volunteers have given our children dreams also.
One wants to become a soldier, another wants
become an Engineer, earn lots of money and help
    other children

17
Reasons for transformation (Contd.)
  • Recruitment of emotionally mature staff
  • Nothing is forced upon the children, they are
encouraged to accept their mistakes and change
  • Children are not punished harshly for the
    mistakes.
  • Discipline is not forced.
  • Children have a lot of freedom. So children can
express their views frankly and confide their
    fears problems.
  • No discrimination among children based on birth
related factors like caste and religion.

18
Reasons for transformation (Contd.)
  • Fulfillment of basic needs like food, clothes
etc. There is no need for the children to steal.
  • Flexible curriculum based on flair and ability of
    the child.
  • Teachers are not strict taskmasters, they are
friends and facilitators. Teacher studies the
background, likes and dislikes of the child,
builds rapport with the child, instills interest
through games, computer, songs, stories, drama,
etc. Major portion of formal lessons through
    activities, experiments and interaction.

19
Reasons for transformation (Contd.)
  • Encouragement to creative pursuits like singing,
drawing, clay modelling etc. which soothes ones
    nerves.
  • Policy of not admitting large group of children
at one time. Not more than two children per
    month.

20
Reasons for transformation (Contd.)
  • No fear of failure. A certain amount of
freedom is very necessary for children's
development. We firmly believe in the maxim 'In
order to succeed, one should have freedom to
    fail'.
  • The punishment method (or transforming method )
    When children deliberately commit mistakes
they are made to sit down and contemplate.

21
Conclusion
  • Emotional health is a primary pre-requisite for
    learning.
  • The more the children are happy, the faster
children will learn. In other words, learning
ability of a child is directly proportional to
    the childs emotional health.
