Reflexive Verbs
Reflexive verbs main characteristic, is that
they indicate that the action is being done to or
for oneself. Reflexive verbs are easy to
identify. Youll always find attached the
reflexive pronoun se in the infinitive. When
reflexive verbs are conjugated, the reflexive
pronoun changes according to the subject.
llevarse ponerse levantarse peinarse inscribirse

Reflexive pronouns are used when the subject and
indirect object of the sentence are the same.
Example Mi padre se pone el sombrero. My
dad puts on his hat. Question1 What does he
put on? sombrero ? direct object. Question 2
Who receives the sombrero? Mi padre ?he is also
the subject.
The action is reflected back upon itself The
subject Mi padre does the action and then
receives it. No outside influence is involved in
this action.

Another meaning for reflexive verbs is that the
person does something directly to or for himself
or herself. Examples Roberto se lastimó con el
martillo. Roberto hurt himself with the
hammer. Mi hermana quiere comprarse un carro
nuevo. My sister wants to buy a new car. Susana
quiere llevarse bien con sus amigas. Susana wants
to get along herself with her friends.
