- Can you think of the ways in which its mission
will affect the USP librarys goal? - Write down these factors and then compare them
with the ones on the next few slides.
8Factors affecting library goals
- The curriculum of the tertiary institution.
-
- The curriculum (course of study offered) guides
the development of the librarys collection. It
determines the kinds of materials the library
needs to collect. It is the major basis upon
which all decisions are made.
9Factors affecting library goals
- Activity
- List other aspects of library work that you think
will be affected by the curriculum of the
tertiary institution.
10Factors affecting library goals
- The teaching/learning styles.
- If faculty staff use a lecture method with
- assigned readings in one or more textbooks,
- the library will receive little usage.
- However if faculty staff use more discussion,
- and students are encouraged to look for
- readings and explore topics and issues on
- their own, the library will be used heavily.
11Factors affecting library goals
- Research
- If faculty staff are involved in research in
- their own disciplines and/or students are
- required to write theses or dissertations, the
- library will need to support these activities
- through the resources it collects and the
- services it offers.
12The mission of The USP Library
- The Mission of the Library is to support the
objectives of the mission of the University by
providing high quality client based services
(The USP Library Annual Report, 2002, p. v)

of the college/university than it ever has been
before - Diversified in its activities and resources

store, sort, retrieve materials advise and
assist users - Complex role of librarians will change due to
computerisation of manual processes - Active Play an active role as a mediator between
the user and knowledge

- consequences of these new roles on
academic libraries?

new roles
- Response to change the library will need to
respond to changes in the curricula and the
manner in which information services are provided - Partnership the library will join with other
scholarly information sources to form a
partnership such as computing services as well as
information resources in other organisations - Services independent of time constraints the
library will respond to information needs when
they occur
19Characteristics of the academic library in its
new roles
- Questions of cost the library will have to
decide how to allocate its money to buy wide
range of resources - Facilities the library will take a leading role
in strengthening the sense of community by
providing facilities for the gathering of
students, faculty and staff - Evaluation the library will be evaluated in new
ways for example in its ability to provide access
to needed information
