  • By Gigi Duarte, Megan Weisenberger, Chase
    Butera, and Liz Stenger

2
A History of the Deupree Center
  • The Deupree Center is part of the Episcopal
    Retirement Homes Inc.
  • The meals on wheels program that the Deupree
Center offers, delivers to over 290 meals to the
    elderly in their surrounding communities.
  • The Meals on Wheels program is funded by the Ohio
Department of Aging which was created through the
Council of Aging of Southwestern Ohio.
  • The Council of Aging was started by those who
felt that the elderly needed their communities
support. This was established in 1970.
  • This Council then sectioned off parts of the
state and made sure that there were programs to
aid the elderly in their community sections.
  • There is a huge support staff who manage the
Meals on Wheels program. JoAnne Smith and Rick
Slagle are just two who work behind the scenes
making sure that those who need aid receive it.
  • There are 85 volunteers who deliver meals. AND WE
    WERE AS WELL!!! YAY US!

The Meals on Wheels Program
  • On arriving at the Deupree Center we were given
meals routes that would lead us to about 5
different homes to which we were to deliver.
These routes remained the same through out our
    time volunteering at the center.
  • We had two routes to do. We split up into two
groups. Gigi and Megan worked together and Chase
    and Liz worked together.
  • The houses we delivered to were in the general
area and were relatively close to each other.
This had been a concern of ours because we didnt
know how much time we would have.
  • The elderly we delivered to were all in apparent
    need and
  • were very thankful for the meals that we
    delivered. They were
  • always excited when we came because they got
    their meals early!
  • We didnt however get a chance to get to close to
    any of the
  • people because time didnt allow it and they
    didnt seem to willing.

Issues the Deupree Center faces
  • The Deupree Center works to combat the justice
issues that face the older generation.
  • The Deupree Center works on the issue of the
common good which states that all people deserve
    food, shelter, and clothing.
  • Deupree Center provides the common good need of
food for those who can not get it on their own.
  • Deupree Center also deals with issues of
    prejudice and poverty.
  • They fight the prejudice that all elderly should
live and homes and not on their own.
  • The Deupree Center respects the elderlys right
    to live independently.
  • The Deupree Center is the voice for the elderly
    who wish to live independently.

6
What we learned (besides how to follow a map)
  • How much the elderly value their independence
  • How much they depend on the services provided by
    the Deupree Center
  • How many people it takes to keep a service like
    this running(its takes a lot)
  • Patience and caring
  • Problems the elderly face everyday that we dont
    think about
  • The value of a good meal
  • The loneliness that affects the elderly

People on our route
  • Gigi and Megan had an interesting woman who they
deemed The Troll. This lady, although seemingly
nice, never came to the door. They would have to
honk the car horn and pound on her door to get
her attention because she was always at her
second floor window. She would yell What? from
the window and when we told her who we are would
just tell us to leave the meal at the door. After
we left the meals she would stare at us until we
    drove away.
  • Chase and Liz often talked about a woman who they
delivered to by the name of Ms. Pitts. This lady
always answered the door in an energetic way and
always seemed as if she could take care of
herself. At least make her own meals. But later
on they discovered that they were wrong, when Mr.
Pitts turned out to be a very elderly woman who
could not get out of bed!! Imagine that!

8
Types of meals
  • Everyday the Meals on Wheels Program provides
    healthy meals to the elderly.
  • The meal always includes main a dish (pasta,
fish, chicken), a vegetable, milk, a roll, a
dessert, another side item (pasta salad, fruit,
    cold slaw).
  • The center also provides low sodium meals for
    those who have diabetes.
  • The center also provides frozen meals for those
who want a meal over the holidays of weekends
that the center is not open.
