Peer-Reviewed Journals
  • Scholarly periodical each article submitted for
    publication is judged, independently, by a panel
    of experts
  • Characteristics of a peer-reviewed journal
  • Formal
  • Cited sources (footnotes and/or a bibliography)
  • Authored by scholars and researchers
  • Purpose of article is to publish results of
    research
  • Publisher is a prominent organization or research
    institution

Search Strategy Tips
  • Boolean Operators
  • AND (narrows search, retrieving records
    containing all of the terms) i.e. apples AND
    oranges
  • OR (broadens search, retrieving records
    containing any of the terms) i.e. apples OR
    oranges
  • NOT (excludes terms from a search, retrieving
    records that do not contain the term following
    it.) i.e. apples NOT spartan
  • Wildcard Truncation
  • system returns records on system, systems,
    systematic
  • ? wom?n returns records on both woman and women
    (singular and plural forms)
  • Nesting
  • Parenthesis, () keep related terms together
  • If searching for an exact phrase, enclose phrase
    in quotation marks,

Dissecting OVID Medlines Mapping Display
  • Where applicable, the keyword term will be
    matched to a Medical Subject Heading (MeSH)
  • Explode Select the Explode box if you wish to
    retrieve results using the selected term and all
    of its more specific terms.
  • Focus Select the Focus box if you wish to limit
    your search to those documents in which your
    subject heading is considered the major point of
    the article.
  • The Scope Note provides a brief definition of the
    MeSH, and lists additional terms that may be
    associated with the MeSH in question

  • Medline (and ANY database having OVID as a
    provider?Includes Global Health) first and
    foremost register for a free personal account
  • Once registered, click on the save search/alert
    tab
  • PubMed first and foremost MyNCBI!
  • One you have a MyNCBI account, click on Save
    Search
  • Alternatively, you can click on the Send To drop
    down box, and direct your results to text, file,
    printer, or clipboard
  • Clipboard feature only holds searches for 8
    hours, then they are deleted!
