LEADERS HAVE A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN CREATING THE
STATE OF MIND THAT IS SOCIETY. THEY SERVE AS
SYMBOLS OF THE MORAL UNITY OF THE SOCIETY. THEY
CAN EXPRESS THE VALUES THAT HOLD SOCIETY
TOGETHER. MOST IMPORTANT, THEY CAN CONCEIVE AND
ARTICULATE GOALS THAT LIFT PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR
PETTY PREOCCUPATIONS, CARRY THEM ABOVE THE
CONFLICTS THAT TEAR SOCIETY APART, AND UNITE
THEM IN PURSUIT OF OBJECTIVES WORTHY OF THEIR
BEST EFFORTS. JOHN W. GARDNER, THE
ANTILEADERSHIP VACCINE, ANNUAL REPORT OF THE
CARNEGIE CORPORATION, 1965

LEADERSHIP IS A WORD ON EVERYONES
LIPS. EVERYBODY AGREES THAT THERE IS LESS OF
IT THAN THERE USED TO BE. OFTEN THE ENORMOUSNESS
OF PRESENT-DAY CHALLENGES AND THE PACE OF CHANGE
SEEM UNACCOMPANIED BY GREAT NOTIONS AND THE
GREAT PEOPLE TO IMPLEMENT THEM. Warren Bennis

LEADERSHIP IN THE KINGDOM
Leadership is the pivotal force behind
successful organizations ...
leadership is necessary to help organizations
develop a new vision of what can be, then
mobilize the organization change toward the new
vision...The new Leader is one who commits people
to action, who converts followers into leaders,
and who may convert leaders into agents of
change. Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus The
Strategies for Taking Charge. 1985. Citation
from 21st Century Leadership, Lynne Joy McFarland
et al., 1993. I am convinced that the key
variable of the future is leadership...For the
global business world, leadership is the
competitive edge...The whole leadership paradigm
must be different for the 21st Century because
the world will be different. Modeling and
mentoring will be the foundation for empowering
leadership. Stephen Covey.

LEADERSHIP
THE IDEAL LEADER FOR THE 21ST CENTURY WILL BE ONE
WHO CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT THAT ENCOURAGES
EVERYONE IN THE ORGANIZATION TO STRETCH THEIR
CAPABILITIES AND ACHIEVE A SHARED VISION, WHO
GIVES PEOPLE THE CONFIDENCE TO RUN FARTHER AND
FASTER THAN THEY HAVE EVER BEFORE, AND WHO
ESTABLISHES THE CONDITIONS FOR PEOPLE TO BE MORE
PRODUCTIVE, MORE INNOVATIVE, MORE CREATIVE AND
FEEL MORE IN CHARGE OF THEIR LIVES THAN THEY EVER
DREAMED POSSIBLE. Robert Crandall, Chairman and
President of American Airlines, in 21st Century
Leadership, 1993.

LEADERSHIP IS NOT ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY
23CENTER FOR MINISTRY ENRICHMENT
LEADERSHIP IN THE KINGDOM
Howard Norton, Editor, Currents, Christian
Chronicle , December, 1993. People and churches
must sometimes let go of the past. Just as
individuals must be willing to say good-bye to
attitudes or circumstances in their past in
order to survive and prosper, congre- gations
must free themselves from non-productive
historical practices in order to be
effective. Some congregations are dying today,
for example because they will not turn loose of
an obsolete leadership style that is autocratic
and dictatorial. This type of leadership might
have made sense in the Army or the Marines during
a time of war, but it is out of place in the
Lords church today as a ring in a swines snout.
Church leaders who insist on running the
churchs business from behind closed doors in a
climate of secrecy are killing the church, no
matter how good their intentions...
