- Jules Cheret, is recognized, as the Father of
poster art (designing over 1000 posters). - The great artists of Paris led the way in the
poster movement. - Steinlen, Grasset, Bonnard, Willette, Forain were
great poster designers, but the most famous
artist of them all was Toulouse-Lautrec.

- These poster designers decorated the walls of
Paris with lithographic masterpieces that
brought light and gaiety to a workday world. - It was not long before poster artists and
publishers realized they could overprint a
commercial edition and make it available for sale
through print dealers

Carnival groups in New Orleans began to look for
ways to announce the carnival season in New
Orleans. As the years progressed, artists became
involved and the Mardi Gras poster was born.
