3As our country was forming, there were slave
states and free states.
4Slave States - States in the United States
that allowed slavery.
Free States - States in the United States
that prohibited slavery.
5In 1818 Missouri asked Congress to consider it
for statehood.
Definition- statehood becoming a state
6CONFLICT AROSE!
7Because Missouri had slaves it should have been
admitted as a slave state.
BUT
the 11 northern states didnt want another slave
state.
8What do you believe were some reasons for the
north not wanting Missouri to join the union as a
slave state?
9The 11 southern states didnt want another free
state.
10Why do you think the south was so against
allowing another free state?
11This argument of whether or not to allow Missouri
to enter the union as a slave state lasted . . .
TWO YEARS!!!!
Wow! Thats a long argument!!
12Finally Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky came up
with a plan.
13The Missouri Compromise
This allowed Missouri to join the union as a
slave state
while Maine joined as a free state.
14To prevent this type of argument from happening
again, the Missouri Compromise also created an
imaginary line drawn across Missouris southern
border that extended west.
15Maine
Missouri
16AFTER that point, new slavery states would be
forbidden north of that line.
17On August 10, 1821, Missouri was admitted to the
Union as a slave state and our countrys 24th
state.
18Do you agree with the Missouri Compromise?
How could the problem of Missouri becoming a
state been solved differently?
