2 Power Styles
Autocratic
Free Reign
Democratic
Some mistakes are just too much fun to only
make once.
3Power Styles
- Autocratic
- This style is used when the leader tells the
officers what needs to be done and how to do it,
without getting the advice of her followers. - The autocratic style should normally only be used
on rare occasions. If you have the time and want
to gain more commitment and motivation from your
officers, then you should use the democratic
style.
4Power Styles
- Democratic
- This type of style involves the leader including
one or more officer in on the decision making
process. - the leader maintains the final decision making
authority.
It may be that your sole purpose in life
is simply be kind to others.
5Power Styles
- Free Reign
- In this style, the leader allows the officers to
make the decision. However, the leader is still
responsible for the decisions that are made. This
is used when officers are able to analyze the
situation and determine what needs to be done and
how to do it. You cannot do everything! You must
set priorities and delegate certain tasks - Do not be afraid to use it, however, use it
wisely!
6Power Styles
- A good leader uses all three styles, depending on
what forces are involved between the followers,
the leader, and the situation. Some examples
include - Use an autocratic style on a new officer who is
just learning the job. The leader is competent
and a good coach. The new officer is motivated to
learn a new skill. The situation is a new
environment for the officer. - Use a democratic style with a team who know their
job. The leader knows the problem, but does not
have all the information. The officers know their
jobs and want to become part of the team. - Use a free reign style with a team player who
knows more about the job than you. You cannot do
everything! The officer needs to take ownership
of their job.
Birthdays are good for you. The more you have,
the longer you live.
7Power Styles
- Using all three
- Telling your officers that a procedure is not
working correctly and a new one must be
established (autocratic). - Asking for their ideas and input on creating a
new procedure (democratic). - Delegating tasks in order to implement the new
procedure (free reign).
8George S. Patton
- Dont tell people how to do things, tell them
what to do and let them surprise you with their
results.
