Jacob Goes to Egypt 1685 B.C. (Egyptian 2nd
Intermediate Era)
  • Joseph already 2nd in Power to Pharaoh!
  • Just before Hyksos rule (1640-1535 B.C.)
  • Jacob dies in Egypt, but buried at Hebron in
    Canaan (Gen 50)
  • Josephs brothers remain with him in Egypt
    (Goshen)

3
Israels Growth Oppression in Egypt (430
years)1685-1255 B.C.
  • Israel prospers first, oppressed later (Exod 1-2)
  • Oppression reaches a crisis in 19th Dynasty of
    the Egyptian New Kingdom Era
  • Pharaoh of the exodus is probably Rameses II
    (1279-1213)
  • Israel was in Egypt for 430 years (cf. Exod
    1240)
  • The latest possible placement for Moses
life-span of 120 years would be ca. 1335-1215
B.C. (based on the evidence from the Merneptah
    Stele (1209 B.C.)

4
Israels Exodus from Egypt in the 19th Dynasty
ca. 1255 B.C.
  • Early date for the Exodus (1446 B.C.) places it
under the rule of Thutmosis III (1479-1425 B.C.)
in the 18th Dynasty. This dating is based
primarily on a literal understanding of 1 Kgs
    61. Historically geo-politically, this dating
    is unlikely.
  • Late date for the Exodus (ca. 1255 B.C.) would
have occurred in the 19th Dynasty under the reign
of Rameses II (1279-1213 B.C.). This date works
    better historically, geo-politically,
    archaeologically.
  • Israel observed her 1st Passover in Egypt before
she leaves, in the shadow of the10th plague (the
    death of all firstborn males)
  • Rameses II was succeeded by his 13th-born son,
Merneptah, who came to the throne at about 60
    years of age.
  • Merneptah campaigned in Libya in Canaan in his
5th year (1209 B.C.). The Merneptah Stele records
the existence of Israel in Canaan in this year.
This is the first mention of Israel outside the
Bible until Neo-Assyrian references in the 9th
    century B.C.

5
Wandering Aroundca. 1254-1215 B.C.
  • Spent almost 1 year _at_ Sinai (1255-54 B.C.)
  • 2nd Passover observed at Sinai
  • Num 10-Num 36 (40 years!)
  • Most of this time _at_ Kadesh Barnea
  • Everyone over 20 dies new generation grows up to
enter Canaan (exceptions are Joshua Caleb)

6
Joshua Successor to Moses-Be strong of good
courage
  • Joshuas life-span ca. 1290-1180 B.C. (110 yrs.
    same length as Josephs)
  • Conquest begins ca. 1215 B.C. under Joshua
  • Jericho, Ai / Bethel, Gibeon, Hazor
  • Mt. Ebal site of Joshuas altar (occupied in
    late13th-early 12th centuries B.C. and then
    abandoned see Adam Zertal)
  • Merneptah in Canaan ca. 1209 B.C.
  • Merneptah Stele mentions Israel as an ethnic
group not with cities or definable boundaries.
This supports a late date better than an early
date of the exodus. No evidence in book of
Joshua for an encounter in battle with Merneptah

7
The Era of the Judges ca. 1180-1030 B.C.(from
the death of Joshua to the Kingship of Saul)(150
years)
  • The early years of this era witness the collapse
    of civilizations throughout the eastern
    Mediterranean region
  • The Aramean migrations into Western Asia (Syrian
and Canaan) at this time play a role in this
    collapse / transition
  • The Sea Peoples (including the Philistines)
also play a role in this collapse / transition
  • Evidence for this external pressure and
subsequent collapse of the Eastern Mediterranean
    Cultures
  • Mycenaean (mainland Greece) culture including
    Troy
  • Last vestiges of Minoan (Crete) culture
  • Hittite (central Anatolia modern Turkey)
  • Ugarit (northwest Syria)
  • Egypt is under severe external pressure at this
    time from the Sea Peoples
  • Attested during the reign of Rameses II as his
    mercenaries
  • Causing problems for Merneptah in last decade of
    13th century
  • Rameses III (1184-1153 B.C.) fights them in the
Egyptian Delta region by land and by sea
