Title: Citing Quotes Activity

1
Citing Quotes Activity
  • 9th Grade English/Language Arts
  • MLA Style

2
The Basics
  • When you quote a line out of a book using MLA
Style, you must put the QUOTE in quotation marks
    WITHOUT punctuation.
  • Directly following the quote, put the authors
last name and page number you found the quote on
    in parenthesis.
  • Put the correct punctuation for the quote after
    the parenthesis.

3
Example 1
  • The Scarlet letter ceased to be a stigma which
attracted scorn and bitterness (Hawthorne 147).

4
Quoting using Lead-Ins
  • Use the authors last name in the lead-in to the
quote at the beginning of the sentence.
  • Hawthorne writes, The scarlet letter ceased to
be a stigma which attracted scorn and bitterness
    (1470).
  • If you use the authors name as a lead-in, DONT
put the name in parenthesis with the page number.

5
Quotes using only 1 source
  • Dont need the authors last name cited with the
    page number in parenthesis
  • ONLY need the page number
  • But Hester, the man lives who has wronged us
    both (1372)!

6
Quotes LONGER than 4 Lines
  • Start the quotation on a new line
  • Indent it 1 inch from the left margin
  • DONT use quotation marks
  • The parenthetical citation comes AFTER the
    closing punctuation mark.
  • You still need to INTRODUCE the quote

7
LONG Quote Example
  • Hawthorne explores the theme of truth within
oneself through Hesters decision to stay in New
    England
  • Here had been her sin here, her sorrow and
here was yet to be her penitence. She had
returned, therefore, and resumed, - resumed the
symbol of which we have related so dark a tale.
Never afterwards did it quit her bosom. (1473)
  • REMEMBER if using more than one source, you
    would use this (Hawthorne 1473)

8
Quote Activity
  • Cite the following quote using one of the methods
    we have went over today.
  • The scarlet letter had not done its office.

9
Things to note
  • The placement of the parenthesis and what
    information is contained in them
  • The scarlet letter had not done its office
  • (Hawthorne 1489).
