Title: A TRIP INTO OUTER SPACE

A TRIP INTO OUTER SPACE

AURORA
  • The aurora is a dynamic and visually delicate
  • manifestation of solar-induced geomagnetic
    storms.
  • The solar wind energizes electrons and ions in
    the
  • magnetosphere. These particles usually enter
    Earth's
  • upper atmosphere near the polar regions. When the
  • particles strike the molecules and atoms of the
    thin,
  • high atmosphere, some of them start to glow in
  • different colors.

TAKE A PEEK IN SPACE
In these pages you will begin with several
options for experiments that may lead to the
answer you are seeking. Scientists go down
many paths that turn out to be dead ends. In
these pages, you will encounter some dead
ends, too. But often a scientist learns much from
a "dead end". You will find that is true here
as well.

CASTING OUR SOLAR SYSTEM IN A NEW LIGHT
  • Moons
  • Origin of the solar system
  • Comets
  • Asteroids

STREAK OF LIGHT
And several years ago, a telescope aboard an
airborne observatory discovered that the star
produces a bright infrared laser beam. The laser
forms as ultraviolet energy from the star zaps
hydrogen atoms around it. This "excites" the
atoms, kicking them to a higher energy level.
When infrared light strikes them, the atoms
amplify it, beaming a bright beam of infrared
energy into space.
7
BLACK HOLE
Black holes are objects so dense that not even
light can escape their gravity,
and since nothing can travel faster than light,
nothing can escape from inside a
black hole. On the other hand, a black hole
exerts the same force on something
far away from it as any other object of the same
mass would. For example, if our
Sun was magically crushed until it was about 1
mile in size, it would become a
black hole, but the Earth would remain in its
same orbit.

HUBBLES HIGHLIGHTS

DEEP SPACE
A myriad of bright stars adorns the late-evening
sky right now. Blue-white
Regulus, the heart of Leo, the lion, stands high
overhead. Yellow-orange
Arcturus, one of the brightest stars in the
night

IGNITION
11
ICE PRINCESS
  • The mild return of LaNina, a condition marked by
cool weather in the eastern pacific and warmer
    water off Asia

12
ASTRONAUT
  • ALAN SHEPARD THE ORIGINAL FIRST COWBOY OF SPACE

MOONS

ASTERIODS
As the first spacecraft to orbit an asteroid, the
NEAR mission promises to answer
fundamental questions about the nature and origin
of near-Earth objects, such as the numerous
asteroids and comets in the vicinity of Earth's
orbit.
