One Health Kansas

• One Health Kansas promotes awareness and
  understanding of the interconnections among
  human, animal and environmental health, and will
  help the citizens of Kansas understand related
  challenges affecting the health of Kansas
  children and adults.

Pathways Goals

• To increase the number of graduates with a
  baccalaureate or higher degree in the food and
  agricultural sciences
• To increase the quality of postsecondary
  instruction within these disciplines.
• To increase recruitment and retention of students
  historically underrepresented in the food and
  agricultural sciences workforce.
• To inform students about career opportunities in
  public health-related professions while they
  attend classes at community college and will
  allow students to obtain early field experience
  in four public health emphasis areas relevant to
  food and agriculture.

Pathways Deliverables

• An introductory survey course focused on public
  health topics and offered jointly by K-State and
  three community college partners
• A summer residency experience that exposes
  students to the four public health emphasis
  areas food safety, infectious disease/zoonoses,
  human nutrition, physical activity
• A 5-year BS/MPH program
• A Director of Undergraduate Public Health

Kimathi Choma earned a B.S. at Messiah College in
1997 before completing two years of
graduate-level chemistry coursework in
preparation for Veterinary Medicine School. He
graduated from the K-State University College of
Veterinary Medicine in May 2007. Dr. Choma was
recruited back to K-State to serve as Director of
Undergraduate Public Health Programs, because of
his enthusiasm for both student advising and
public health professions, and his work
experience related to undergraduate student
advising, human healthcare, animal health and
nutrition. Dr. Choma is responsible for
coordination of the public health survey course
and the Summer Undergraduate Residency in Public
Health at K-State, liaison to the community
college partners on matters related to course
offerings and student recruitment, development
and delivery of enhancement and retention
programs for community college transfer students
in transition to K-State, and linkage of K-State
undergraduates focused on public health careers
to critical university resources related to
academic and social support, financial
assistance, externship and professional
development opportunities.

One Health Kansas Professional Staff
Joan Leavens earned a B.S. in Elementary and
Early Childhood Education from Southern Illinois
University at Edwardsville in 1980. She has
extensive experience as a K-6 classroom teacher
and an environmental educator. Prior to joining
the One Health Kansas Initiative, Ms. Leavens was
employed as the Client Services Manager for
YouthFriends in Kansas City. As the One Health
Kansas Integration/Outreach Leader, Ms. Leavens
will be responsible for conducting educational
programs that increase community awareness of One
Health issues. Specifically, Ms. Leavens will be
responsible for the development and delivery of
outreach activities for K-12 students, their
teachers, their parents and the general public

One Health Kansas Professional Staff

• Jodi Freifeld earned a D.V.M at the University
  of Missouri in 1999, and a M.B.A from the
  University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in
  2008. Dr. Freifeld served in the US Army from
  2001-2005. During her military career, Dr.
  Freifeld coordinated a Bite/Scratch Report
  Program in Washington. In addition, she
  implemented a zoonotic disease prevention program
  and ran food safety audit programs in Sinai,
  Egypt.
• Dr. Freifeld was recruited to K-State to serve as
  the One Health Kansas Curriculum Coordinator,
  because of her veterinary, public health, and
  business expertise. In this position, she will be
  expected to
• Communicate with statewide organizations whose
  mission is to understand and address public
  health workforce needs
• Identify needs for preparative and continuing
  education for public health workforce and
  stakeholders
• Take a leadership role in developing and
  marketing new One Health courses
