Title: Summary of thoughts from HESS

1
Summary of thoughts from HESS MAGIC members
  • October 21, 2005

2
MAGIC-II
  • Foundation ready (October, 2005)
  • Frame and rail system assembly (November, 2005)
  • Start installation of mirrors (April, 2006)
  • Work on the MAGIC II camera began 8 months ago.
    Camera ready (October, 2006)
  • New camera with very high QE (result of joint
work with Electron Tubes, Photonis, and
Hamamatsu, paper will appear in NIM A)

3
MAGIC-II
  • MAGIC-II camera 1000 pixels (0.10 deg) with
    FoV almost 4 degrees
  • Cost is 4MEUR (pure investment, no salary,
trips, and so on.) actual equivalent to US cost
    is 10M.
  • Ongoing work on SiPMs with Hamamatsu. There is a
plan to bring 40 QE units on the market in the
    fall of 2006

4
MAGIC-II
  • MAGIC-I paper on 1ES1218304 (z0.182) is in
    preparation spectral index 3.0 - 0.35

5
HESS-II
  • Dish 600m2 (28m), parabolic, F36m
  • Mount 200 deg/mi az, 100 deg/min alt
  • Camera 0.07 deg, 2048, 3.3 deg
  • Acquisition rate 3 kHz
  • Status Dish procurement, search for MEUR to
    complete
  • Commissioning mid to late 2008 (if start
    ordering soon)
  • Cost 10MEURcontigency
  • Cost HESS-I telescope - 2MEUR (with hidden
costs included and in US equivalent 5M)
  • Other Comments as far as mechanical
    engineering, installation etc. is concerned,
going from 12m to 28m is a much bigger challenge
    than I anticipated

6
After HESS-II MAGIC-II
  • Next project is 100MEUR
  • Large pressure from the president of the
Max-Planck society on both groups to join in near
future. Pressure from EU funding source(s)
    requiring a unified project.
  • Concrete source(s) of funding exist (at least
    theoretically) ESFRI newly established
framework for science in UE (initial IACT
considerations are positive). Minimal project for
    ESFRI candidacy is 100MEUR.
  • To get into ESFRI road-map with a construction
to start in 2010 a full proposal must be
    generated within next 3 years.
  • Participation of non-European countries may help
in securing this funding as a sign of major
    recognition

7
After HESS-II MAGIC-II
  • Both HESS and MAGIC groups work on the draft for
    ESFRI candidacy.
  • French partners (HESS group) proposing to act
quickly and concentrate on solid scientific
objectives (deep observation of the region near
the galactic centre). Short term but not
exclusive scenario is to clone 20-25 more HESS-I
class telescopes (10-12m, perhaps with wider FoV)
at HESS site. Goal 2010 (overlap with GLAST).
  • A few exotic devices with less mature technology,
such as 20-30m telescopes, might be proposed as
    an exploratory sub-program.
  • Source of anticipated significant running costs
    is not yet identified

8
After HESS-II MAGIC-II
  • German colleagues propose science emphasis more
on improvement of sensitivity and resolution (100
GeV 100 TeV domain, most relevant to galactic
    science)
  • The ideas of CT array (10-15 m class telescopes
with large FoVgt5 deg) with graded spacing from a
50m in the center to 200m at the periphery. The
goal is to gain collecting area at high energies
and get low energy sensitivity by combining
telescopes in the trigger utilizing single photon
counting mode. Alternatively, a few large
aperture telescopes (HESS-II) can be deployed in
the center. Cost per telescope is a serious
    issue.
  • Really high altitude site(s) generate concerns

9
After HESS-II MAGIC-II
  • No clear view if the next step should be EU or
international, or single vs dual hemispheres.
General consensus doesnt exist except on getting
    onto the EU science roadmap.
  • MAGIC group is exploring ideas of large aperture
telescope with 10-20 degrees FoV with 10-100
    thousand channels. General consensus doesnt
exist people are busy with MAGIC-II
