Learning Objectives/Aims
  • By the end of the session participants will be

  • Access Maternity and Infant Care Database-Ovid
    version and be aware of its key functions
  • Perform a search (and limit) and locate a
    Standard Search
  • Many records are assigned to one or more of 475
    standard searches on key topics found using a
    field-specific index. This provides fast
    retrieval for those topics.
  • View, print or save search results
  • Handouts and details of a hands on exercise will
    be used.

Maternity and Infant care Database
  • Important resource for healthcare professionals
    and academics involved in care of women and
    infants.
  • Contains references to over 550 International
    journals, books, and grey literature.
  • Covers pregnancy, labour, birth, postnatal and
    neonatal care, and the first year of life.
  • Updated monthly.
  • Database coverage mainly from the mid 1980s.

Logging on
  • Go to www.hilo.nhs.uk and click on the link
    MyAthens.
  • Then log on using the athens username and
    password supplied and go to resources.
  • Click on the link ovid-online (second from last
    in the list)
  • Choose Maternity and Infant Care database

Access to the database in the library is not
restricted by password

  • There is a single search box with various limits
    options at the bottom of the page
  • Keyword, author title or Journal title fields are
    visible.
  • Click More Fields to see other fields such as the
    Standard Search

Running a Search
  • Type your first term in the search box and click
    search.
  • Enter the publication years before searching if
    you want to limit this.
  • To look for subject heading (descriptor) tick
    map term box before entering term
  • A Combine Searches icon displays once your first
    results appear in the search history display.

  • Tick the Standard Search (SS) field
  • Enter a broad term in the search box
  • e.g.
  • For placental abruption enter placenta
  • For caesarean section by choice enter
    caesarean section
  • Click on DISPLAY INDEXES

  • Select the term
  • Click the perform search button
  • Results display will show the Placental abruption
    ss. and the number of results in the search
    history box.
  • References of the latest search appear
    automatically below the search box.

Limiting a search
  • Once you have run a search you can apply limits
    to focus your search on a specific aspect of
    information contained in a record
  • Click on More Limits button below the search box
  • Choose which limit you want
  • Eg. Choose Clinical guidelines
  • Click limit a search button which appears above
    the search history

Saving, displaying, emailing or printing results
  • Select required results by ticking them.
  • Results manager is at the bottom of results page.
  • Check fields and Results format the default has
    abstract and citation and should usually be
    adequate for most purposes.
  • Choose the relevant action eg. Save.

  • You will be given an exercise sheet and be asked
    to
  • Log in to database using the instructions in the
    handout provided and locate the Standard Search
    facility
  • Run a search using the index in the Standard
    Search field.
  • Select two of the references and save to a file
    on the desktop.
